Yuck! No! No way! These are some of the many reactions that many millions from across the world would’ve given when they first heard that Facebook will be rebranded to something called ‘META‘. No, we’re joking. That’s actually the new name of the social networking giant that we’ve been used to for for a decade as Facebook.
The company announced the rebranding during Facebook Connect. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Thursday at the Connect event that the new name will be Meta. “We are a company that builds technology to connect. Together, we can finally put people at the center of our technology. And together, we can unlock a massively bigger creator economy,” said Zuckerberg.
“To reflect who we are and what we hope to build,” he added. “But over time, I hope we are seen as a metaverse company,” Zuckerberg said. He also added that the name Facebook didn’t fully encompass everything that the company does in recent times, which closely linked it to only one product. Now hopefully, the name will connect with the metaverse as a whole.

CEO Zuckerberg is owner of the Twitter handle @meta (tweets currently protected) and meta.com, the latter which redirects to a welcome page of Facebook. The website outlines the changes from the social media giant to the new website. As mentioned a week ago when reports first came out about the company’s rebrand, it’s part of the their efforts to shift away from a social media company to building the metaverse.
Facebook decided to take to their social media pages to announce the major rebrand which told people how Meta will play a major role in building the metaverse. ‘A place where we’ll play and connect in 3D.’ They’re calling themselves the next chapter of social connection and we hope to believe them.
