Yesterday proved to be a breakthrough day in the world of technology. While researchers and scientists are looking for cures for coronavirus, a team from Monash, Swinburne and RMIT universities in Melbourne recorded the fastest ever internet speed in the world of 44.2 terabits per second (Tbps).
We woke up to this news today and it’s a massive breakthrough for the world of technology. It’s estimated that such speeds can allow you to download 1,000 high definition movies in the matter of a second or two. Gone are the days where we had to leave our desktops on overnight to download a movie or two.
In UK, the average broadband speed currently is estimated to be around 64 megabits per second (Mbps) while in India, we look at an average speed of around 6.5 Mbps, so you can only imagine what levels of advancement have been achieved. Australia lies in the middle of global rankings for internet speeds but this new breakthrough may help them move upwards on this ladder.
As per reports, this record internet speed was achieved by replacing around 80 lasers used in some existing telecoms hardware with a ‘micro-comb’, a standalone piece of equipment. This was planted into and tested outside the lab using existing infrastructure, much like the one being used by National Broadband Network (NBN) of Australia.
They managed to produce the highest number of data through the use of a single optical chip, which is nothing but what’s used in standard fibre-optic broadband systems all across the world. “We’re currently getting a sneak peek of how the infrastructure for the internet will hold up in two to three years’ time, due to the unprecedented number of people using the internet for remote work, socializing and streaming,” said Bill Corcoran, lecturer at Monash University.
