Young Faf du Plessis to Now Captain Namibia!

There’s a new kid on the block and this young and energetic guy’s name is Faf du Plessis. You probably know this name as the fit and handsome, 40-year old former South African cricket captain. And you would be shocked to hear our headline saying he’s going to now captain Namibia. But let us break it down for you a little bit.

Firstly, this is not the same, super athletic Faf du Plessis we’ve been watching for over a decade. This is a new guy with the same name, who has recently been appointed captain of the Namibia U-19 team, ahead of their Division 1 qualifiers for the 2026 U-19 World Cup, with their campaign beginning on 28th March 2025.

Young Faf du Plessis to Now Captain Namibia!

Say hi to Faf du Plessis Namibia!

The series is co-hosted by Nigeria and Faf will try to help his side gain qualification to this mega tournament, which will give him a lot of more eyeballs if they manage to get there. So far, he’s played 3 games for Namibia and if he’s successful here, they will play the U-19 World Cup being hosted by Zimbabwe and Namibia next year.

The 17-year old Faf du Plessis will lead his side against Kenya, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, and Uganda during their qualifiers campaign. At the same time, the more experienced Faf will be playing for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2025, after finishing a successful stint as the captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore.

The younger Faf is a right-handed batter himself, along with bowling some right arm leg-spin. This could be some handy all-round attributes which will help them qualify to the 16th edition of the U19 World Cup. The last edition took place in 2024 where Australia beat India by a massive margin of 79 runs in the final in South Africa.

His full name is Franscois Schalk Du Plessis and the internet was full of confusion when he was announced captain of the junior Namibia side. In his 3 games for Namibia U-19 in 2024, he didn’t bat and had one bowl against Scotland U-19 where he finished with figures of 0/21. He has big shoes to fill, only because of his name now.

Now some reports online say that the original Faf du Plessis was also asked to play for Namibia as his father was born in Windhoek, while Faf was born in Pretoria. When they take the field in the U19 World Cup Qualifiers, it’ll be interesting to see how the younger Faf shapes up against his opponents in Nigeria.
