We always get the best of tennis action when there’s a grand slam taking place and once again, we saw some high levels of entertainment in just Day 1 of the last slam of the year. We’re referring to US Open 2022 which began only today and on the first day itself, we saw a massive upset in Round 1 of the women’s draw.

We had Romania’s Simona Halep in action today in Round 1 of the US Open 2022 and she was up against world number #124 and qualifier in this tournament, in Ukraine’s Daria Snigur. Obviously, every had Halep as a major favourite to not just win today but also go deep in the tournament, but the Ukrainian qualifier had other plans for her today.

It’s easy to call this one a ‘shock upset’ because most of you wouldn’t have even heard of Snigur before this game. Surely, she’s going to have a lot of sponsors and press obligations after this tournament is over, even if she doesn’t make it past Round 2 of the competition. She was playing the biggest match of her career, and she passed it with flying colours too!

Snigur took the first set 6-2 and after that, Halep was back to her most dangerous best as she won the second set 6-0. Considering the dominance in the second set, you’d think Halep would storm through but she hit too many unforced errors in the game and found herself losing the final set 4-6, and losing the match as well.

Everyone’s going to be talking about Snigur in the days to come but for now, it’s social media that was abuzz after this shock victory. Even the crowd was backing her, and she managed to hold her nerve at important moments. We thought she wouldn’t be able to serve out the game but she was calm and composed when most needed.

It’s safe to call this the best game of Day 1 and it could be the biggest upset of the tournament itself. The three sets ended in less than a hour and that’s how good Snigur was on the day in New York. The 20-year old was in tears at the post match interview, getting this win in her maiden grand slam, which means a lot to her personally as well as for her country.

She was playing in front of her family and her father was shell-shocked and overwhelmed, because neither of them would’ve expected this.
