It’s been months or I could even say years since I last remember the top two seeds of a particular Grand Slam actually run through the tournament as expected and end up in the final of a tennis major. That’s what didn’t happen in the US Open 2021 women’s competition, with an unseeded player and a qualifier reaching the final, but that’s exactly what happened in the men’s final of the 2021 US Open!
We have world number #1 and top seeded men’s player Novak Djokovic in action and he’s been brilliant all tournament long. In fact, he’s had the most amazing 2021, having won all three Grand Slams this year so far, looking to complete a flawless year. The only step he put wrong this season was when he lost in the Tokyo Olympics 2020 to Alexander Zverev, who he beat in the semi final here at US Open 2021.
He’s playing against #2 seed Daniil Medvedev who has been one of those next-gen kids we’ve been looking at for a couple of years now, but he sadly has no Grand Slam titles in his kitty yet. This is his best chance yet, having made the US Open final once before in 2019 and the Australian Open 2021 final as well. It could be third time lucky for him and he’s the underdog today at odds of 3.20 with ComeOn.
US Open 2021 so far
It’s been a troublesome road for the top seed here at 2021 US Open. Apart from his Round 2 game which he won in straight sets, all of his matches have gone into 4 sets or more, with the semi final against Zverev being a tight and well fought 5-set game. He’s surely tiring and if pushed to the fourth of fifth set, this could turn out to be a really tough outing for him in the US Open 2021 men’s final.

As for Medvedev, he’s been flawless and has only lost one set in the entire tournament so far, which makes him have much less of a time on court, and his body is doing pretty well. Only Botic van der Zandschulp took him to a fourth set and he completed a 3-set win in the semi final against Felix Auger Aliassime as well. Djokovic vs Medvedev head to head
Overall, these two have met 8 times on the senior tour and in the Djokovic vs Medvedev head to head count, it’s the former that leads 5-3. In Grand Slam tournaments, they’ve met twice and Djokovic won both those encounters, including the Australian Open final earlier this year. However, in last 5 outings across surfaces, Medvedev leads 3-2 and he’ll fancy his chances here for a maiden grand slam title.
