It’s not everyday that you get to see an 18-year old progress to the Round of 16 stage in a tennis grand slam major tournament. And that’s exactly what we witnessed a few hours ago when Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz Garfia played an inspiring 5-set thriller and ended up on the victorious side as well, progressing to the final 16 of the US Open 2021 men’s tournament.
He was up against the 23-year old Greek superstar Stefanos Tsitsipas who is currently one of the best players on the circuit and he’s proved time and again how he can come back from any and all situations. Today however, he wasn’t able to against the Spaniard. The latter was leading 2-1 when Tsitsipas came and won a set 6-0, which took him to 2-2 and he clearly had the momentum going into the final set.

After winning a set to love, one would think the Greek tennis player had this game in his pocket but that wasn’t the case. The final set went into a tie-breaker where the teenager Garfia kept his cool under high pressure situations, and went on to win the tie-breaker. Probably one of the best 5-set games in the 2021 US Open so far, it’ll be interesting to see how far Alcaraz progresses in this tournament.
He will now take on 32-year old German professional Peter Gojowczyk in the Round of 16 and one would imagine Alcaraz can get through that as well. Earlier in Round 1 of the 2021 US Open, the unseeded Alcaraz took out #26 seed Cameron Norrie and then beat Arthur Rinderknech as well, before the shock defeat against the number #3 seed Tsitsipas.
