There was a whole drama about the Indian tennis contingent going to the Olympic Games 2021 with a top player like Rohan Bopanna not being able to make the qualification criteria and only 3 Indians representing the country in the sport of tennis. Today, the first of these three were in action as Sumit Nagal took the courts in the men’s singles event.
The 23-year old has been doing well in recent years and after wining the 2015 Wimbledon’s juniors doubles titles, he’s had a few appearances in senior grand slam events as well. His best result was a Round 2 appearance in the 2020 US Open and now, he’s making Indian proud at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as well, winning his first round game earlier today.
He faced off against Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin who has been around since a few years now and is quite a known name in the tennis community as well. It was a breeze of a first set for Nagal who won it 6-4 and an early break in the second set allowed him to keep his advantage but Istomin showed his experience, making a comeback to win the second set 7-6 and taking it into a deciding set.

One would’ve thought that Istomin held the advantage as Nagal wasn’t able to bring out his best game in the third set. Many a times, Nagal gave away break points but he managed to hold on each time and finally, he broke Istomin and went on to win the final set 6-4! It turned out to be a great start for India in the men’s singles tennis event and we’ll have to see who Nagal plays in Round 2 now.
On the other hand, there’s Sania Mirza and Ankita Raina who are also going to be in action soon in the women’s doubles tennis event, so we’re expecting them to progress through their Round 1 game as well. whole lot of hope was emerged for India at Olympics 2021 and for all updates on the Indian contingent at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, make sure you keep reading and stay tuned to ReadScoops.com.
