Olympics 2021: Saurabh Chaudhary Tops 10m Qualification

Just Day 2 of the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo and mostly everywhere we looked, we saw Indians finishing poorly or in other events, busting out early. In the shooting scenario too, the women didn’t do all that great as bot of Chandela and Valarivan failed to get past the qualification round in the Women’s 10m air rifle event. However, the same day for the men shooters saw much better results.

Olympics 2021: Saurabh Chaudhary Tops 10m Qualification

In action in the Men’s 10m air pistol at Olympics 2021 were India’s Abhishek Verma and Saurabh Chaudhary and we all had high hopes today from these two. A total of 36 shooters began in today’s Qualification Round (with the top 8 to qualify) and while most people had eyes on the more experienced Verma, it was the 19-year old Chaudhary who was topping the charts right from the world go.

He was in the top few ranks right from the start but a couple of good series allowed him to ladder up and eventually take the lead, which he refused to give away later. Eventually, Chaudhary finished at #1 in the men’s 10m air pistol and has given India a whole lot of hope going into the final. As for Verma, he was trailing considerably but made a good comeback to reach the top 5, but he couldn’t hold on to it.

Every shooter today was allowed 6 series of 10 shots each and when this quota was over, Chaudhary ended with 586/600 in the qualification round, having shot 28 inner tens and ending with an average score of 9.767. He narrowly missed an Olympic record by 5 points but what matters is that he qualifies at the top while Verma failed at the last hurdle, ending with 575 points and finishing 17th eventually.

Among Verma’s past achievements are a gold medal in the Men’s 10m air pistol in Beijing 2019 and a bronze medal in the same Men’s 10m air pistol in Jakarta Palembang 2018. Here, a few bad shots at the end saw his position fall drastically which shows that this is a sport of fine margins and he will now be cheering on his colleague Chaudhary s the latter will want nothing less than gold. #Cheer4India.

As for Chaudhary, it’s still early days in his career but he has won a gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games in the Men’s 10m air pistol event. The final will take place at 12pm today, so he doesn’t have too much time to gather his thoughts and catch a breath.
