Olympics 2021 – Only 3 Players to Represent India in Tennis

There’s been so much of drama leading up to the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Whether that’s the games being pushed ahead by a whole year or cardboard beds to avoid sexual activity for players or much more. And to make things worse in the Indian contingent for the Olympic Games 2021, there’s a whole lots of trouble happening with the group of tennis athletes sent to represent India.

The trouble is mostly revolving around Rohan Bopanna, a 41-year old doubles player who we can say has been one of the leading Indian tennis players for a few years now. In fact, he partnered with Sania Mirza in the mixed doubles of Wimbledon 2021 which is one of the most competitive tournaments on the annual tennis calendar.

However, very surprisingly, Bopanna’s name doesn’t feature on the list of Indian tennis players playing the 2021 Olympic Games. He was supposed to pair with Divij Sharan in the men’s doubles and Mirza for the women’s doubles but now there’s not going to be a men’s doubles team at all. Bopanna even took to social media to vent his frustration, to which other Indian tennis players also stood up for and supported.

Sania Mirza herself condemned the All India Tennis Association (AITA) for misleading the player and saying that he can still sit on a plane and be a part of the team, even though the International Tennis Federation (ITF) had made it clear right from the start that Bopanna was not eligible for qualification.

The AITA further went on to condemn the pair of Mirza and Bopanna when a series of tweets and screenshots clearly shows that the AITA was at fault. “Twitter comments by Rohan Bopanna and then Sania Mirza are inappropriate, misleading and without knowledge: they should have checked the rule book of ITF regarding qualifications. – Anil Dhupar, Hon. Secretary General, AITA,” they said on Twitter.

Eventually, it’s going to be only three Indians taking part in the tennis events at Olympics 2021, which is Sumit Nagal for the men’s singles and the pair of Sania Mirza and Ankita Raina for the women’s doubles, which considerably reduces India’s chances of coming home with a medal.
