French Open 2022 – Home Favourite Alize Cornet On To Round 3

Everyone loves the French Open because it’s the most challenging of all four surfaces when you compare the four annual grand slam tournaments. You get to witness some amazing battles every year, both in the men’s as well as women’s tournaments. The 2022 French Open is underway and we’ve seen some pretty good and intense fights here so far too.

One of them happened today in Round 2 of the women’s tournament at the 2022 Roland Garros. This was the final game on the list of fixtures for 26th May and we had a home favourite in action, in the 32-year old Alize Cornet. The French tennis player was brilliant on the day as she won in three sets to progress to the third round of the competition.

French Open 2022 – Alize Cornet Progresses to Round 3

Cornet came into this tournament as an unseeded player but we always knew she could cause an upset or two because of playing on such surfaces for so many years. Today she was up against a higher ranked and younger opponent in Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko and she outdid her opponent to win this bout and move on to Round 3 of the Roland Garros 2022 tournament.

She won the first set with ease as she got past Ostapenko 6-0 and we all thought that we were in for an early finish. However, the Latvian who is seeded #13 in this tournament made a swift comeback, winning the second set 6-1 and setting up a good contest in the final set. And while they weren’t on court for too long, they produced a good show for the millions of fans watching from around the world.

Cornet had the crowd behind her and that’s what spurred her on to make an early break in the final set and go 3-0 up after a double break as well. However, Ostapenko managed to break back once and set up a decent contest but it wasn’t to be. Cornet looked like she was tiring in many places but she managed to hold on and win the final set 6-3, progresses to fight another day in this 2-week event.

Like we mentioned above, the crowd was firmly behind her and that even cause Ostapenko at once point to walk up to the chair umpire and complain about the noise in the crowd. Regardless of the complaints though, it was a fine performance from the local star and she fairly deserves to march on in this tournament. See her reaction after the win:

To add some perspective to this victory, let us tell you that Ostapenko is a former French Open champion, winning on these clay courts back in 2017, so that’ll be a massive win for Cornet. Having made her French Open debut all the way back in 2005, this is only the sixth time that Cornet will reach the third round of this event and will be wanting to make the fourth round for the second time ever only.
