It’s been one hell of a US Open 2021 tournament so far. Especially in the women’s competition, we saw all of the top seeds being knocked out early in the competition. The last of the top seeds was #2 seed Aryna Sabalenka who was knocked out earlier last night by Leylah Annie Fernandez and we spoke about this 19-year old making the US Open 2021 final, unseeded in this competition.
Later in the same night was Semi Final 2 where British player Emma Raducanu was in action, also only 18 years old, facing off against Greek player Maria Sakkari. While there were some fierce rallies being played, it turned out to be a pretty straightforward finish for the teenager, beating Sakkari in straight sets to create some unprecedented records, going down into the history books.
Firstly, it allowed us to say something that we’ve probably never said before at Read Scoops. We have a Grand Slam final where not one but two teenagers will face off, as it’s Fernandez vs Raducanu in the 2021 US Open women’s final. Both of them have skipped a few rungs on the ladder as there are many more experienced players who haven’t yet won a Grand Slam title, but one of them will on 12th Sep 2021!
Talking about Raducanu though, the smiling assassin played a super solid game in the semi final and she will surely fancy her chances in the US Open 2021 final. While Fernandez is unseeded, she was still a part of the draw while Raducanu wasn’t originally. She played several games in the qualifiers before the main draw and with that, she became the first ever qualifier to reach the final of a Grand Slam.
Remember, this record stands across all the four grand slam tournaments and includes the men’s as well as women’s tournaments, so it’s a big day in history and Raducanu will go to sleep a very happy girl tonight. A couple of days of rest before the US Open 2021 final and we’re surely in for a cracker there!
