We’ve witnessed some good shots and we’ve witnessed some great shots on tennis courts, but the on-air commentators today just called the action on one of the ‘shots of the century’. And it’s not too uncommon for this player’s opponents to stand and admire some of his brilliance, which was once again on display in the ongoing 2023 French Open.
We’re talking about Spanish player Carlos Alcaraz who is nothing less than a magician on the tennis courts, often bringing out extravagant and extraordinary shots that would leave any human being astonished. Today in an all-important semi final game at Roland Garros 2023, he played one for the ages against the former world number #1, Novak Djokovic.
French Open 2023 shot of the tournament
Seeded number #1 in this tournament, Alcaraz has proven to be especially good on clay and his record here has been brilliant as well. Prior to today’s semi final, he had lost only one set in the tournament and he wasn’t at his best today, losing the first set to Djokovic rather convincingly. The number #3 seed Djokovic knew though, that Alcaraz can bring out his A-game at any point of time.
Right enough, he played a shot early in the second set where he had his back towards the net, ran all the way back to the baseline, and played a shot without looking, to a Djokovi who was waiting for the return at the net. However, Alcaraz managed to pass the Serbian and catch the line, laughing when he realised that he made that pretty unbelievable shot.

The commentators called in the shot of the tournament and possibly the shot of the century, and that’s a lot when coming from people who have watched tennis as a sport for decades. And when he completed the shot in a rally which was dominated by Djokovic, the Serb himself was pleased to see this piece of brilliance, clapping away at what he’d just witnessed.
Even the Roland Garros official Twitter account was quick to put up a video of the rally, with caption, “In Novak voice: NOT TOO BAD 🤯 #RolandGarros | @carlosalcaraz”. Everyone in the stadium also was up on their feet to applaud this shot, which saw Alcaraz’s confidence increase after a very poor first set for his standards.

Now only 20 years old, Alcaraz is hunting for his second career grand slam title. His athleticism is second to none on the ATP tour right now, and this was just another example of how fit the youngster is. For those watching the game live, expect to see a few more of these kind of strokes for the rest of this game, and in the final too, if he makes it.
