Played on outdoor hard courts, the ATP Shanghai Masters is an annual tennis tournament for men’s professional players, that began in 2009 and takes place each year in Shanghai, China. There are nine ATP Masters 1000 tournaments on the men’s tennis calendar and Shanghai Masters is one of them, so it’s an important event on the yearly schedule.
Currently, the competition is called the Shanghai Rolex Masters for sponsorship reasons. It’s the only ATP Masters tournament to not take place in Europe or North America, and the men’s singles and doubles competitions are what you can expect during this tournament which takes place in early October each year.
Apart from three years during the Covid-19 pandemic, this competition has taken place each year. Currently, the 2024 Shanghai Masters is underway between 2-13 October 2024. Here, Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz came in as the defending champion but he had to pull out of the 2024 tournament because of a last-minute injury.
In terms of the doubles, it was Spain’s Marcel Granollers and Argentina’s Horacio Zeballos who were crowned champions in 2023. The 32 men’s seeds in the singles are usually given a bye, straight into Round 2 of this tournament. The player to win the first ever edition of the Shanghai Masters men’s singles edition was Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko, who was a surprise package considering he played right in the middle of the Federer-Djokovic-Nadal-Murray era. He beat Rafael Nadal in straight sets in the Shanghai Masters 2009 final, but never reached the final of this event again.

From there, the next nine years of men’s singles action at ATP Shanghai Masters was won between Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, and Roger Federer. It was only until 2019 that this trend was broken, as another Russian in Daniil Medvedev won the final, beating Alexander Zverev in straight sets.

Nadal made two Shanghai Masters finals in 2009 and 2017, but ended up on the losing side on both occasions. Till date, no other player in Shanghai Masters history has reached a final on more than one occasion, and still not win a title. Djokovic remains the most successful player here, with 4 titles to his name, while Murray is right behind him with 3 singles titles.
It was 2018 that Djokovic last won here and it’s fair to say that his tennis career is far from over, still winning titles at the highest level. The most recent final was 2023 Shanghai Masters, where Hurkacz beat Russia’s Andrey Rublev in the final, where the final set was a nail-biting won, the former winning 10-8 in the third set tie-breaker.
