It was Rafael Nadal vs Daniil Medvedev in the final of the 2022 Australian Open men’s tournament and we knew there were going to be some fireworks and of course, some brilliant tennis being played in Melbourne. But we were disappointed to see a very one-sided 1st set of the 2022 Aus Open final as Medvedev broke the Spanish player’s serve twice to win 6-2 and take an early lead.
However, the number #6 seed Nadal has 20 Grand Slam titles to his name and the 35-year old is experienced, way more than his Russian opponent will ever be. He fought back hard and broke Medvedev’s serve early in the second set, taking a lead and increasing his chances of levelling the final 1-1 and his chances of winning the Aus Open 2022 final as well.

Now one of the biggest talking points of the game was when Nadal was leading 2-1 in the 2nd Set and Medvedev was serving to stay on serve. He was 15-30 down on serve and the two engaged in what was one of the best rallies of the game. There were a total of 40 shots in the rally and it ended with Rafa winning the point and getting himself two break points.
Eventually, it was Nadal who broke and took a 3-1 lead in his bid to level the game 1-1. But let’s talk about that outstanding rally. Usually, the person who wins the big rallies is the person who goes on to win and we hope that stays true for Nadal as well. At the end, it was an out-of-this-world backhand slice to win the point, leaving Medvedev speechless.

Nadal was not looking himself in the 1st Set and this point and this game would’ve brought back the energy and fight that he needed in order to stay alive in this final. However, as we were writing this, Medvedev was soon to hit back and won his next service game to love, followed by breaking Nadal’s serve to get back on serve in the second set, 4-3.
Either way, Nadal was lacking the confidence and conviction needed to compete in this game and winning the long rally is what will help him stay in it for sometime longer.
