A year of delays is what we got at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 and finally when it took off in Japan, India sent a total of 127 athletes to the Summer Games. It was a disappointing first couple of days with a few Indians crashing out and ending their efforts but on just the second day, India claimed their first medal of Olympics 2021 thanks to weightlifting pro, Mirabai Chanu Saikhom.
She was one of the most spoken about athletes in the Indian contingent and everyone was excited about what she could bring home when she played the Women’s 49Kg weightlifting event. In Round 1, she lifted 84 and 87 Kgs in her first couple of attempts and failed in the third attempt of 89 Kgs. On the other hand, China’s ZH Hou took a commanding lead over everyone else with a 94Kg lift.

Eventually, she was brilliant on the day but it was too much to be able to catch up with her Chinese opponent. She lifted 115Kg in her second round in her second round. She then tried for 117Kg in her third attempt but failed, albeit securing a silver medal for India. She in fact became only the second ever Indian weightlifter to go on to win a medal at the Olympic Games’ history.
It was a new Olympic record set by Hou, who ended with a tally of 210 Kg while India’s Mirabai ended with 202 Kg. Finishing in third place and getting a silver medal was Indonesia’s Windy Cantika Aisah who lifted 194 Kg which was considerably far away from the top two. A very historic and proud moment for Team India and Chanu won’t be forgetting this medal victory anytime soon! #Cheer4India
