Kabaddi Player Sandeep Nangal Shot Dead

We’re hating the fact that we have to bring such news to our viewers but we’ve just learnt the news of an international kabaddi player being shot to his death during an ongoing tournament in Jalandhar. The player Sandeep Nangal was attacked by unidentified assailants and it’s learnt that over 20 rounds were fired at his head and chest.

Jalandhar (Rural) Deputy Superintendent of Police, Nakodar, Lakhwinder Singh, confirmed that this incident took place earlier today. From the twenty rounds fired, about 8-10 shots were pumped into Nangal and he obviously died on the spot. A very disturbing video of the incident has been circulating on social media ever since this happened this evening.

The videos circulating on social media include those taken by spectators from a distance, who were watching the sport. The commentary was heard to be continuing even after the bullets started to be fired but spectators were slowly getting aware of the situation and fleeing the spot. Another video shows people carrying Nangal’s dead body after the incident.

Other questions being raised by people online is about the security in a state like Punjab where someone can just walk in with guns and fire in the middle of the day, harming whoever they want to. And that too in a place were hundreds were gathered, and no one could do anything to prevent what has turned out to happen.

Nangal is said to have played kabaddi in Canada, USA, UK and other places apart from in Punjab. Before he death, he was also leading a kabaddi federation and has clearly done a lot for the sport in Punjab and elsewhere. The investigation in currently underway and we’re yet to understand what led to such a situation.

Sandeep Nangal Ambian ruled the kabaddi world for a decade and more and was known for his expertise at the bottom. The incident in question took place at Mallian Kalan village of Shahkot, where the kabaddi tournament was happening. Another youth was also shot in the leg in this incident, and we’re hearing that 5-6 miscreants were part of the attack that took place at around 6pm earlier today.
