IPL Auction 2018 Live Updates

Preview: Coming in to the IPL 2018 Auction, the 8 teams were asked to submit their player retention lists by 5th January, 2018. This was then expected to be the biggest auction ever as teams would only be allowed to retain a maximum of 5 players (using a combination of retention and RTM cards at the auction). Big players at the auction included the likes of Ben Stokes, Yuvraj Singh, Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard, Gautam Gambhir, Glenn Maxwell and quite a few others. Let’s see where they go, and for how much.

For me, I will be most excited to watch where the leg-spinner Rashid Khan goes. He was sold to SRH last year, for a price of INR 4+ crore but I’m expecting a much higher bid for the 19-year old this time around. Could he possibly touch the 10 crore mark? Stay tuned to find out. We at Read Scoops are covering the entire IPL 2018 Auction, with LIVE updates of which player went to which team.

Lunch!

That concludes the morning session of Day 1 of the IPL 2018 Auction. It was some intense bidding in that session and you can expect the same to continue when they return after the lunch break. The biggest surprise was Gayle going unsold. Even though his form has dropped, not many would’ve expected him to go unsold. Keep watching this space for continued LIVE updates of the IPL 11 auction.

Afternoon session!

Set 5. Wicket-keepers:

  1. Parthiv Patel – UNSOLD!
  2. Quinton de Kock – Rs. 2.8 crore – Royal Challengers Bangalore
  3. Wriddhiman Saha – Rs. 5 crore – Sunrisers Hyderabad
  4. Jonny Bairstow – UNSOLD!
  5. Dinesh Karthik – Rs. 7.4 crore – Kolkata Knight Riders
  6. Naman Ojha – UNSOLD!
  7. Robin Uthappa – Rs. 6.4 crore – Kolkata Knight Riders (RTM)
  8. Sanju Samson – Rs. 8 crore – Rajasthan Royals
  9. Ambati Rayudu – Rs. 2.2 – Chennai Super Kings
  10. Sam Billings – UNSOLD!
  11. Jos Buttler – Rs. 4.4 crore – Rajasthan Royals

So after bidding for almost every wicket keeper in the set, Mumbai Indians ended up buying none!

First fast/pace bowlers set of the day:

  1. Mustafizur Rahman – Rs. 2.2 crore – Mumbai Indians
  2. Mitchell Johnson – UNSOLD!

That concludes the first pace bowlers set. Cummins, Rabada and Umesh would’ve been the talking points and they walked away with top contracts. Ishant, very much like last year, fails to get a contract, even though he had a much lower base price of Rs. 75 lakhs this year. Malinga’s decline over the last few years made the chances of him being unsold very high. No surprises in this set. Waiting for when Rashid Khan goes under the hammer!

Starc on joining the KKR family:

The leg-spinners will now be auctioned:

  1. Piyush Chawla – Rs. 4.2 crore – Kolkata Knight Riders (RTM)
  2. Imran Tahir – Rs. 1 crore – Chennai Super Kings
  3. Ish Sodhi – UNSOLD!
  4. Karn Sharma – Rs. 5 crore – Chennai Super Kings
  5. Rashid Khan – Rs. 9 crore – Sunrisers Hyderabad (RTM)
  6. Amit Mishra – Rs. 4 crore – Delhi Daredevils
  7. Samuel Badree – UNSOLD!
  8. Yuzvendra Chahal – Rs. 6 crore – Royal Challengers Bangalore (RTM)
  9. Adam Zampa – UNSOLD!
  10. Kuldeep Yadav – Rs. 5.8 crore – Kolkata Knight Riders (RTM)

Everyone knew it was going to be Rashid Khan who would walk away with the biggest contract. Beating his 4 crore contract of last year, he was purchased by Preity Zinta’s KXIP for Rs. 9 crore, but Sunrisers used their RTM card to get him. KKR used their RTM cards to retain both their spinners in Chawla and Kuldeep.

Uncapped batsmen list:

  1. Suryakumar Yadav – Rs. 3.2 crore – Mumbai Indians
  2. Shubman Gill – Rs. 1.8 crore – Kolkata Knight Riders
  3. Ishank Jaggi – Rs 20 lakh – Kolkata Knight Riders
  4. Ricky Bhui – Rs. 20 lakh – Sunrisers Hyderabad
  5. Mayank Agarwal – Rs. 1 crore – Kings XI Punjab
  6. Himanshu Rana – UNSOLD!
  7. Rahul Tripathi – Rs. 3.4 crore – Rajasthan Royals (from base price of 20 lakh)
  8. Manan Vohra – Rs. 1.1 crore – Royal Challengers Bangalore
  9. Siddhesh Lad – UNSOLD!
  10. Prithvi Shaw – Rs. 1.2 crore – Delhi Daredevils

The set all boiled down to the bidding process of Indian U19 captain Prithvi Shaw, who went unsold at the IPL Auction last year but has been making headlines since then. At the ongoing U19 World Cup, he has two fifties and has led his team to the semi final, where they will soon take on Pakistan. He was sold for an impressive amount, but we can expect much more from this talented batsman in the coming years at the Indian Premier League.

Final session of Day 1 of the IPL 2018 auction and we will begin with the set of uncapped all-rounders:

  1. Rahul Tewatia – Rs. 3 crore – Delhi Daredevils
  2. Deepak Hooda – Rs. 3.6 crore – Sunrisers Hyderabad (RTM)
  3. Vijay Shankar – Rs. 3.2 crore – Delhi Daredevils
  4. Harshal Patel – Rs. 20 lakh – Delhi Daredevils
  5. Kamlesh Nagarkoti – Rs.3.2 crore – Kolkata Knight Riders
  6. Krunal Pandya – Rs. 8.8 crore – Mumbai Indians (RTM)
  7. Nitish Rana – Rs. 3.4 crore – Kolkata Knight Riders
  8. D’Arcy Short – Rs. 4 crore – Rajasthan Royals
  9. Shivam Dube – UNSOLD!
  10. Jofra Archer – Rs. 7.2 crore – Rajasthan Royals (from base price of Rs. 40 lakh)

That’s the end of the uncapped all-rounders set and it was Krunal Pandya who grabbed the spotlight. After intense bidding, Mumbai Indians were delighted to just hold up their RTM card and retain him for a massive amount of Rs. 8.8 crore. A surprising contract was that of Rs. 4 crore, which went to Australia’s D’Arcy Short. However, he was brilliant in this year’s Big Bash League.

Also, it was good to see Jofra Archer picking up a handsome deal of 7.2 crore, even though he hasn’t made his IPL debut as yet. Will he perform, or will he be last year’s Tymal Mills, picking up a massive contract but failing to prove worthy.

Set of uncapped wicket-keepers:

  1. Jitesh Sharma – UNSOLD!
  2. Ishan Kishan – Rs. 6.2 crore – Mumbai Indians
  3. Nikhil Naik – UNSOLD!
  4. Ben McDermott – UNSOLD!
  5. Aditya Tare – UNSOLD!
  6. Ankush Bains – UNSOLD!
  7. Vishnu Vinod – UNSOLD!
  8. Sheldon Jackson – UNSOLD!
  9. Prashant Chopra – UNSOLD!

A very ‘UNSOLD’ kind of set, this one!

Uncapped fast bowlers set:

  1. Kulwant Khejroliya – Rs. 85 lakh – Royal Challengers Bangalore
  2. Siddarth Kaul – Rs. 3.8 crore – Sunrisers Hyderabad
  3. T. Natarajan – Rs. 40 lakh – Sunrisers Hyderabad
  4. Basil Thampi – Rs. 95 lakh – Sunrisers Hyderabad
  5. Rajneesh Gurbani – UNSOLD!
  6. Aniket Choudhary – Rs. 35 lakh – Royal Challengers Bangalore
  7. Syed Khaleel Ahmed – Rs. 3 crore – Sunrisers Hyderabad
  8. Navdeep Saini – Rs. 3 crore – Royal Challengers Bangalore
  9. Avesh Khan – Rs. 70 lakh – Delhi Daredevils
  10. Ankit Rajpoot – Rs. 3 crore – Kings XI Punjab

Day 2 of the IPL 2018 Auction was equally eventful and stressful for team owners. The highlight of the second Day was Jaydev Unadkat bagging a massive contract of Rs.11.5 crore after picking up 24 wickets in last year’s Indian Premier League. He was purchased by Rajasthan Royals.

For the Universe Boss, however, it wasn’t so smooth sailing, as he was UNSOLD thrice in the auction, until Kings XI Punjab snapped him up for Rs.2 crore (base price) minutes before the auction ended. For all similar sports content, you can check out our Sports Scoops section!
