There was a time in the early 20th Century where India dominated the sport of hockey, so much so that they were a feared team in the quadrennial Olympic Games and well, the trophy cabinets were just filling up. It was 1928 when India first won GOLD in hockey at the Summer Olympics, and then they followed it up with gold medals in 1932, 1936, 1948, 1952, 1956, 1964 1980.
They won in almost everyone location of the world and hockey was also made the national sport of the country because of this success. However, sometime over the years, cricket began to take over as the main sport in the country and while India also won silver in 1960, and bronze in 1968 and 1972, hockey was on a major downslide in India.

And then came the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo where both the Indian men and women’s hockey teams showed that they still got fight in them, reaching the semi-finals of their respective tournaments. However, both ended up finishing spirited journeys with losses in the semi finals but still a chance to finish on the podium in the respective third-place games.

India men had to play Germany in their 3rd place game and it was a very well fought game right till the end. There would’ve been a whole lot of pressure on Team India because they hadn’t won a medal in this sport since 1980. However, they managed to keep their calm in this game earlier today, winning 5-4 in full-time thanks to a fabulous save from Sreejesh from a Germany penalty corner.
Crowds watching on television across India would’ve erupted in joy as it became a truly historic moment. We’re noticing a bit of a resurgence in Indian hockey and after 41 years, India finished on the podium in hockey, securing a bronze medal and India’s fourth medal at Olympics 2021 so far. For those who watched, the victory would’ve surely brought tears to your eyes!
