What is the European Super League?

If you woke up the morning of Monday, 19 April, your probably heard a lot of noise and commotion about something known as the European Super League. Well, we did too and for those who just don’t know what this is as yet, we’re going to break it down for you. Put very briefly, 12 of Europe’s leading football clubs have come together to begin a new competition known as the Super League!

What is the European Super League?

The competition is going to be a mid-week tournament and it will be governed by its Founding Clubs itself. In case you’re wondering who these founding clubs are, here you go – Atlético de Madrid, Real Madrid CF, AC Milan, FC Barcelona, FC Internazionale Milano, Juventus FC, Arsenal FC, Chelsea FC, Liverpool FC, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

What is the European Super League?

A joint statement was released by all 12 founding clubs to announce this competition and it has led to a lot of protests and furore among the community, organizers and the general football fan community. It is said that three more clubs are likely to join the original list of 12 and the inaugural season will take place as soon as possible.

This has come as a complete shock to the football world and while it’s a breakaway league for now, they founding clubs have expressed their interest in working together with UEFA and FIFA in partnership in the future. The founding clubs have apparently shared an interest of improving the quality and intensity of European football since years and this rebel league may be just the way to go about it.

“We will help football at every level and take it to its rightful place in the world. Football is the only global sport in the world with more than four billion fans and our responsibility as big clubs is to respond to their desires,” said Florentino Pérez, Real Madrid CF President and the first ever Chairman of the Super League.

Super League Competition Format

  • Number of teams – 20 participating clubs including 15 Founding Clubs and a further 5 teams can qualify annually based on achievements in their prior respective seasons.
  • Fixtures – Mid-week matches with all participating clubs having to continue to play in respective national competitions. It will preserve the domestic match calendar.
  • Format – An August yearly start with clubs participating in two groups of 10 teams each. Playing home and away fixtures, the top three in every group qualifies for the quarter finals. A 2-leg knockout format will be used to qualify to the final which is expected to take place in May of the next year, at a neutral venue.
