We’re a week into the UEFA Euro 2020 which began on 11th June 2021. 24 participating nations have all played at least a game each and we’ve been treated to some fun action so far. From young players to the most experienced veterans, we’ve seen them all. Some playing their first European Championships while some playing their 3rd, 4th and even 5th Euro Cup!
Today however, we want to answer a question a lot of people have been asking – Who is the oldest player at the UEFA Euro 2020? And just to give you a simple and direct answer, it’s Maarten Stekelenburg. The Dutch goalkeeper who also plays for Eredivisie club Ajax has a brilliant story and he’s not just part of the squad but also an integral part of the playing eleven too!

Born in September 1982, he’s 38 years old and will in fact turn 39 years old later this year. One would not think that when they look at him between the sticks on the field. He narrowly missed the record to become the oldest ever to participate in a UEFA Euro competition, with Hungary’s Gábor Király holding that record, playing at the age of 40 years in the Euro 2016 tournament, which was the last edition itself!
Close after Stekelenburg on the oldies list in this tournament is Pepe. The Portuguese defender is known for his stoic nature and solid defensive abilities, which has gained him a lot of acclaim over the years. Born in February 1983, he is 38 years old and the second oldest in the tournament, born a few months after the Dutch keeper!
