World Cup 2022 – Jules Koundé Asked to Remove Gold Chain

We’re not sure if you know but FIFA usually has rules in place regarding chains as accessories during matches. Today, something unusual happened during the 2022 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 game between France and Poland. It was in the first half when a player who went unnoticed sporting a gold chain was asked to remove it during the game.

We’re talking about French centre-back Jules Koundé who quietly managed to start his game with a gold chain and it was not until the 42nd minute that he was spotted wearing the chain by one of the officials. With thousands of cameras at these matches, people on social media were quick to spot this, while it took the referees slightly longer.

Jules Kounde asked to remove gold chain

A lot of the comments on social media were about the fact that he shouldn’t have been allowed to begin the game with the gold chain in the first place. And while we’ve seen many ways of games being stopped in the past, we’ve not seen this too many times where there’s a stoppage for a player to remove an accessory.

The 24-year old has got a lot of style and swag, but rules are rules and they honestly should be respected. The FC Barcelona players is an important part of the France squad now as they attempt to go on to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup and defend their victory from the last World Cup back in 2018.

In this particular game against Poland, they started really well but couldn’t find the net until this moment when Kounde was asked to take his chain off. A couple of minutes later, Kylian Mbappe put a lovely pass on to Olivier Giroud, the latter finding the net just before half-time and taking France 1-0 ahead, and one step closer to the quarter final.

Kounde has played 3 games at the 2022 FIFA World Cup so far and while he’s not assisted or scored any goals so far, he’s an important part of the back-half for the team. Quite a few jokes popped up on social media when he was asked to remove his chain, having had to be helped by someone on the line to take it off.
