No More Gambling Sponsors on Premier League Jerseys?

There’s been a constant discussion about whether or not it’s right for there to be gambling sponsors among football clubs of the English Premier League. Considering it’s a social vice, the UK Government has been pushing the EPL since a while to get a blanket ban on gambling sponsors from their different franchise clubs.

The last update was in May 2022 where it was likely that the EPL banned such sponsorship activities, while reports suggested that this would cause the league losses of as much as £40 million / year. Now, the Premier League has asked its 20-member clubs to take a vote on the future of gambling sponsors, since there’s been no action from the Government as yet.

For those who don’t know, the online gambling and betting industry is one which is growing every day and is a multi-billion dollar industry across the world. They make up for a considerable amount of the total sponsorship received each year in this football tournament, and it would take a vote from 14 out of 20 clubs against this in order for the ban to be approved.

As per the ban, gambling brands will still be able to sponsor EPL clubs but it won’t be allowed the prime sponsor slots in front of the club’s jerseys. They will still be allowed other strategic locations on jerseys like the sleeves, back, etc. Everton and promoted side Bournemouth were the latest to sign betting brands as their sponsors, partnering with Stake.com and Dafabet respectively.

As per reports, the Premier League is keen to see gambling banned from the tournament and such sponsors phasing out over the next three years. An update on the vote and the future of such sponsors is expected to be complete within the next week or so. In April 2022, UK’s Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) introduced new rules that limited the advertising activity of betting companies.

This includes restrictions against featuring sports stars and social media influencers, placement on team kits and stadiums, which is expected to come into play from October 2022. Currently, betting brands that are title sponsors of Premier League teams include Dafabet, Fun88, Sportsbet.io, Betway, BetVictor, 32Red, Bet365, ManBetX, and many others.

“We are undertaking the most comprehensive review of gambling laws in 15 years to make sure they are fit for the digital age. We will publish a white paper which sets out our vision for the sector in the coming weeks,” said a spokesperson from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport regarding these new restrictions.

Understand the revenues coming in from such brands, teams are likely to vote in favour of these brands being allowed to sponsor, but we’ll know once the voting is complete within a week’s time.
