FIFA WC 2022: Wout Weghorst Gets Yellow Card on Bench

We’ve seen one of the best and most entertaining FIFA World Cups in the history of this tournament, with goals and upsets and early exits, and everything else being witnessed already. Today, 10th Dec 2022, was a quarter final encounter of Netherlands vs Argentina and we were sure this game wouldn’t disappoint either, given the experience and talent in both sides.

And while the action on the pitch was quite intense, there was some action taking place on the sidelines as well. While the managers are the ones who are usually agitated and animated, it was actually the players on the bench who were getting more excited than anyone else. At one point in the first half, a Dutch player who wasn’t a part of the playing eleven and was on the bench was even given a yellow card.

Wout Weghorst gets yellow card from the bench!

We’re talking about the 30-year old Wout Weghorst who wasn’t a part of the starting eleven for Netherlands but he still managed to get reprimanded be the referee in this all-important quarter final. It happened a few minutes after Argentina went ahead late in the first half, going 1-0 up because of a piece of brilliance by Lionel Messi and a finish by 24-year old defensive player, Nahuel Molina.

The striker plays for Turkish Süper Lig club Beşiktaş and he’s not had a great season, becoming the brunt of quite a few jokes on social media over the months. Now, he gave social media another chance to take a go at him, as his ‘best contribution’ this World Cup turned out to be this yellow card in the quarter final. Surely, he won’t be a happy man seeing the memes we’ve seen online!

Weghorst moved to Besiktas after being loaned out from English Premier League franchise, Burnley. He didn’t have a great time there either, so his career seems to be on a slippery slope at the moment. He was even trolled by one user saying that he got the yellow card for his Burnley career (OUCH)! See the moment of the carding here:

Earlier in the game, the opposition’s Angel di Maria was also seen jumping up and down on the bench, not starting the game today for Argentina. Keeping all of this aside, the Dutch will be looking to make a difference in the second half and all jokes also aside, Weghorst may be brought on and he could actually make a difference today.

But with the yellow card already, manager Louis van Gaal may decide to leave Weghorst on the bench for the second half as well. What do you think?! Leave your comments and let us know.
