Qatar vs Ecuador Live Updates

Full-time: 5 minutes of added injury time and Qatar manage to get their first corner of the game in the final minute. It was also the last play of the match and at the time of the final whistle, it’s Ecuador 2-0 who get vital points in this Group A encounter. It’s also the first time that the hosts have lost the opening game in the history of the FIFA World Cup. Big game for the South Americans and they bag 3 precious points in this opening match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, with Enner Valencia scoring both.

78′ mins: Qatar has been way better in the second half so far but the scoreline still reads 0-2 and the sixth yellow card of the game is given to the home team’s Akram Afif. A few substitutions took place and among them was the 2-time goal scorer today, Valencia.

56′ mins: Another card and it’s the first yellow of the second half as Ecuador’s Jhegson Mendez gets penalised for his foul on Akram Afif.

Half-time: Not much to talk about after the second goal for Ecuador, and they go into the half-time break 2-0 up. They’ve asserted a whole lot of dominance on the hosts and go into the break with 66% possession. Just before the half-time whistle (after 5 minutes of injury time), Almoez Ali narrowly missed finding the net, missing a header while being uncontested right in front of goal.

36′ mins: Karim Boudiaf tackles Enner Valencia from behind, gets yellow card. Fourth of the game so far.

32′ mins: Second GOAL and it’s that man again. Enner Valencia finds the net for the third time in this first half itself, with two of them being allowed. He scores his fifth FIFA World Cup goal, this time finding the net with a header. Qatar have defensive issues as Ecuador goes 2-0 up in the first half.

29′ mins: Another card. It’s the third one of the game, in the first half itself. This time, it’s the first Ecuador card, as Moises Caicedo gets yellow. Chances of a send-off are slowly increasing as the game is still only one-third complete so far.

22′ mins: Almoez Ali gets a yellow card. Second one of the game and second for Qatar as well. He fouled the 4-time World Cup goal-scorer, Enner Valencia.

20′ mins: Ecuador clearly dominating so far. 74% possession and 23 attacks as compared to 8 of Qatar.

16′ mins: Penalty awarded and their captain and record goal-scorer Enner Valencia celebrates again. This time the goal will be counted as Ecuador goes 1-0 up. Goalkeeper Saad al Sheeb gets a yellow card for grabbing the striker’s foot in a tackle in the box. Second clear error from this keeper.

5′ mins: GOAL disallowed! What a start for the South American team. They’ve taken just 2 minutes and 40 seconds to find the net after the Qatar goal-keeper made a massive error. But the VAR check shows to be an offside and the goal has been disallowed. Enner Valencia found the net but the scoreline stays 0-0.

2′ mins: Kick-off and most of the possession has been with the host nation so far.
