English Footballer Harry Maguire Gets Prison Sentence

Breaking news coming in as English footballer Harry Maguire gets a prison sentence of 21 months and 10 days. The center back plays for and captains Manchester United and it was as recent as last week that he was last spotted on the pitch with the Red Devils jersey on. He faces prison time on the counts of aggravated assault, resisting arrest and repeated attempts of bribery.

Since the charges were misdemeanours and it’s said to be Maguire’s first offence, the sentence is set to be suspended and the team will also be appealing the decision. He was convicted by a court on the island of Syros where he was out on holiday, and he, his brother and a friend were arrested after a fight broke out.

As per reports, it is said the fight broke out over claims of Maguire’s sister being injected with a ‘rape drug’ while they were out partying in Mykonos. The court was asked to suspend the hearing but it went out regardless, without the three defendants who were Harry himself, his brother Joe Maguire and their friend Christopher Sharman.

The incident happened last Thursday on a family getaway and he was quick to release a statement on the same. “Following the hearing today, I have instructed my legal team with immediate effect to inform the courts we will be appealing. I remain strong and confident regarding our innocence in this matter – if anything myself, family and friends are the victims,” he said.

“When you’re a sportsman and a role model you have to accept what you’ve done and say sorry. Until today, we haven’t had that – they have said it’s all the fault of the policeman,” said the lawyer who defended their case. He’s referring to the fact that there was no apology given by the defendants as yet, which aggravated the court.

Recently, he was also named in Gareth Southgate’s England national side squad even after this incident took place, and it’ll be interesting to see whether he will be cleared to play or not. As per reports, Maguire is said to have tried to bribe the police station, saying, “Do you know who I am? I am the captain of Manchester United, I am very rich, I can give you money, I can pay you, please let us go.”
