Deepika Kumari Ends 9th in Archery Ranking Round

Including staff and team management, Team India sent a total contingent of 220+ people to the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020 which was delayed by a whole year but finally kicked off today. The entire world has been buzzing with excitement of what’s going to happen over the next couple of weeks and which country will end up on top of the medal’s leaderboard. Of course, Team India had its hopes up as well.

Deepika Kumari Ends 9th in Archery Ranking Round

One of their biggest medal hopes was Deepika Kumari Mahato who is currently ranked #1 in the world in women’s archery and she wasn’t just a hope but a clear favourite in the Olympics 2020. To kick start proceedings, Kumari was in action on Day 1 in the women’s individual event, already having the experience of a gold medal in the 2010 Commonwealth Games, in the women’s individual recurve event.

When she got out on the field on 23rd July 2021, we expected nothing less than gold from her again and after shooting 72 arrows in rounds of 6 each, she ended in 9th place of 64 archers in the Ranking Round. She came into this event looking to win that elusive Olympic medal and has made a good start towards the same. She scored 663 points while Korea’s San An finished with 680 points – a new Olympic record.

Over the past decade or so, Kumari has been more or less the poster girl of Indian archery and the 27-year old has brought the country a lot of recognition and success; and we’re sure she’s not done yet. Her women’s individual event was immediately followed by the mixed team’s event at the 32nd Olympic Games.

Now, Kumari faces off against Bhutan’s Karma in the Round of 32 game which will be played next and we wish her the best of luck for the same.
