Yashasvi Jaiswal Creates History; Equals Wasim Akram’s Record

It’s not too often that you see batsmen equalling or breaking records set by bowlers but this is exactly what happened in the ongoing 3rd Test of India vs England, at Rajkot. Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was on fire as he was hitting the ball to every corner of the park, in the 2nd innings as India was building on their 1st innings lead, crossing the 500-run mark as well.

He went on to score his 3rd Test hundred which was also his second of this series, where he’s scored 500+ runs in only 3 Tests. He went on to convert his century to bring up his second Test double century too, after initially leaving the field with a back spasm towards the end of Day 3. Today on Day 4 of the match, he went on to equal a 28-year old record in Test cricket!

Yashasvi Jaiswal Creates History; Equals Wasim Akram's Record

Yashasvi Jaiswal equals most sixes in a Test innings – 12!

We’re talking about the record for the  most sixes in a single Test innings. Pakistan’s Wasim Akram (who was better known for his bowling) was surprisingly the holder of this record for as many as 28 years, scoring a mighty fine 257* Test best score against Zimbabwe way back in 1996, in an innings that included 22 fours and 12 sixes. Today, his record was about to be broken.

India were hard on time as they built their lead to 556 runs and there were less than 5 sessions in the game to bowl out the English side to take a 2-1 lead in the series. Still, they allowed the batsmen in the center to reach individual milestones, included Jaiswal’s double century and debutant Sarfaraz Khan’s fifty, which was his second fifty of the game.

Once they both completed their respective milestones, captain Rohit Sharma didn’t wait too much longer. Jaiswal hit two more sixes off the bowling of Joe Root, and Sharma allowed the two batsmen one more over to bat. In that over, Sarfaraz took control, so Jaiswal wasn’t able to hit the 13th six of his innings. However, his 214(236)* is still going down as one of the best Test innings in recent times.

Both the batsmen were from Mumbai and other Mumbai batsmen like Suryakumar Yadav were quick to shower praise on them as well. With 557 set to win, India are well on top of the game but one thing is for sure – there’s a new hero on the block in Yashasvi Jaiswal. At just 22 years of age, he’s already on the verge of breaking world record, so the future is very bright indeed.
