World Test Championship (WTC) Finals 5-Fers List

When you talk about the World Test Championship (WTC), there’s not a super long history backing the competition, as the first edition was hosted only between 2019-2021. And after that very successful first season, WTC 2021-2023 was announced, which is only the second edition of this tournament in the longest form of the game.

New Zealand beat India in the first edition of the WTC Final in 2021 and in that low scoring game, a few bowlers did really well to give the Kiwis the win. This includes a great performance by tall pacer Kyle Jamieson, who picked up 7 wickets in the match to go with 21 runs in the 1st innings, which won him the Man of the Match award too. Here, we’ve maintained a list of all WTC Final 5-wicket hauls…

India scored only 217 in the 1st innings at Southampton, and Jamieson was the wrecker-in-chief, picking up 5/31 in 22 overs, going at a miserly economy rate of only 1.40 runs per over. He got the crucial wickets of Rohit, Kohli, and Pant, along with a couple of tail-enders to go down in history as the first bowler to get a 5-fer in WTC Finals history. After him in the same game which was the inaugural WTC Final, Mohammed Shami also picked up a 4-fer to dismiss New Zealand for 239 in their 1st innings, while Tim Southee got 4/48 in the 2nd innings, thus both missing by a wicket each to join Jamieson on this WTC 5-fers list. Australia takes on India in June 2023 for the second edition of this competition final, and we expect a couple of more entries on this list.

With both of India and Australia having some world-class bowlers in their respective squads, we think that it won’t take more than a couple of days in the WTC23 Final for us to see more entries on this list. On the batting front, there hasn’t been an individual century in WTC Finals as yet, and that’s another milestone moment that could take place in this upcoming WTC 2023 Final.

In the overall standings for WTC 2021-23 most wickets list, Nathan Lyon is sitting pretty at the top of the list with 83 wickets in 19 matches this season. At number #3 on this list is India’s Ravichandran Ashwin who has 61 wickets in 13 games this season, and the two of the have picked up five and two 5-wicket hauls respectively this season. Don’t be surprised if one of these two get a 5-fer in the WTC23 Final.
