WATCH: Brutal Wrestling Move in European Cricket League

The European Cricket League (ECL) has been great for promoting cricket in the region but at the same time, we’ve always found a lot of entertainment from these game because of the lower quality of cricket being played. We saw another very surprising and amusing moment in a recent game at ECL 2024, Championship Week – Match 6.

It was Jinnah Brescia from Italy taking on Old Victorians from Jersey and the latter put up 113/5 in their quota of 10 overs. In the chase, there were quite a few ups and downs which ended with Brescia requiring 2 to win from the final ball of the game. And when the nail-biting game came to an end, we saw some brutal physicality from the teams to end the match.

Physical battle ends game in ECL T10

They needed 30 runs in the final 2 overs and after a massive over of 23 runs in the 9th over, Jinnah Brescia needed only 7 runs in the final over. Julius Sumerauer had the ball and he did a great job to restrict them to only 5 runs in 5 balls. When they needed 2 runs off the final delivery, he jammed in the perfect yorker, before the physical battle began.

Hassan Ahmad was the batter on strike, on 26(21)*. He managed to keep out the yorker on the off-side and there seemed to be an easy single on offer, which would’ve tied the game. However, as he started to run the single, Sumerauer decided to take him down with a classic wrestling move, as the two collided in the middle of the pitch.

Ahmad was out cold on the ground for a while but the overall outcome was that he couldn’t get up to complete the run and even get a tie for the team. On the other hand, Old Victorians didn’t complete a run out either, considering the spirit of the game. And while we thought the fielding team was going to be penalised, it was counted as a fair move. See the video here:

The game took place on 19th March 2024 and Victorians ended up winning by 1 run. Everyone was unsure of what the result would be but it was given as a fair move by the bowler, and they got the victory which seemed very unlikely. The least we would’ve thought would happen would be a tie or the umpires adjudging it as a dead ball. But that didn’t happen!

Old Victorians went on to make the final of the tournament, where they eventually lost to Hornchurch by a margin of 7 wickets. However, European Cricket takes place through the year and we’re sure there will be more of all of these teams and players for you to hear about in weeks and months to come.
