WPL 2024: Sophie Devine Gets Run Out, Bails Don’t Fall

Whether it’s the Indian Premier League (IPL) or the Women’s Premier League (WPL), drama and entertainment is always guaranteed. And we’ve been seeing a whole lot of it in the last couple of games at the WPL 2024 season. Today, we had one game between RCB Women and Delhi Women, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

Batting first, Delhi Women put up 181/5 in their 20 overs and that was quite a competitive total, but nothing is enough when you’re playing a star-studded lineup like that of RCB Women. Smriti Mandhana was dismissed early while Ellyse Perry was run out for 49 and a few minutes after that run out, New Zealand’s Sophie Devine almost found herself run out as well!

Sophie Devine run out, but bails don’t fall

RCB needed a little bit of consolidation after losing both the set players in Perry and Molineux. However, a little bit of confusion in the calling between Devine and Richa Ghosh saw the former being sent back from the middle of the pitch. She was nowhere in the frame when the throw came in and the LED lights on the stumps lit up, as the Delhi players started celebrating.

It was Radha Yadav bowling the 13th over and building the pressure when this Sophie Devine run out chance happened. She touched the ball to Meg Lanning at cover and the latter flung the ball in to the wicket-keeper much before Devine could get back. The ball then bounced out of the keeper’s gloves and went straight onto the stumps.

However, the fielders were still unsure of whether it was out or not, because there was doubt of whether the ball dislodged the bails or not. Upon watching the replays, it showed that the ball did indeed hit the stumps, but it didn’t successfully dislodge the bails. A few seconds later, the keeper’s gloves smashed into the stumps and the bails eventually fell off.

As per cricketing rules, the ball has to dislodge the bails in order to be considered out, whether it’s a stumping or a run out. In this case, it was the gloves that did so and hence, Devine was adjudged not out on the big screen. Devine however, was dismissed a couple of overs later for 26(16) and she wasn’t able to make enough of use of that chance given to her.
