Mashonaland Eagles 16 ALL OUT in Zimbabwe Domestic T20 Final

Yes, you’re reading that title correct. Yes, a team got 16 runs ALL OUT 😮 in a professional T20 game. And yes, Durham was playing in Zimbabwe’s domestic T20 competition. We’re not sure of the reason why English county side Durham was a part of the Zimbabwe Domestic T20 2024, but they had a brilliant and unbeaten season before going on to break records in the final.

Right through the season, Durham won 5 out of their 5 games to top the points table, while Mashonaland Eagles finished second on the points table with 3 wins in 5 games. And while the other games weren’t so one-side, the 2024 Zimbabwe domestic T20 final saw Durham hand their opponents an absolute hammering, which included Eagles getting 16 all out!

Mashonaland Eagles get 16 all out!

Batting first, Durham put up the biggest score of the tournament with 229/6 in their 20 overs. This was led by Bas de Leede’s 58(29) while there were quickfire forties from Ollie Robinson and Haydon Mustard. They were also helped by 23 extras from the Eagles bowlers, including Hamza Sajjad being the most expensive bowler – 1/56 in the 4 overs of his spell.

Coming out and chasing 230 to win the game and the 2024 Zimbabwe Domestic Cup was super ambitious and we didn’t think Eagles would be able to do it. However, we weren’t expecting them to collapse either, losing seven wickets before they got a double digit score and eventually getting bowled out for a record low team total of 16 runs.

It took them only 8.1 overs to lose all their 10 wickets and they were absolutely no match for the Durham bowlers on the day. Three bowlers picked 2 wickets each while two other bowlers picked one wicket each, and two Eagles batters were run out. By doing so, they allowed Durham a 213-run victory which is the third largest T20 win in men’s professional cricket around the world.

Durham came to Zimbabwe and got a lot of confidence from the tour but Eagles will feel ashamed that they had to suffer such a poor loss to a visiting team. Not only did they concede the third largest victory in T20s, but they also brought up the third lowest total in men’s T20s – after 10 all out by Isle of Man (2023) and 15 all out by Sydney Thunder (2022).

Their embarrassment included 5 ducks to their batters and captain Chamu Chibhabha scoring 4 while Tapiwa Mufudza at number #11 got an unbeaten 4. The Durham bowlers conceded 2 extras or else the total could’ve been even lower than what they allowed. And this score in a final was what became even more embarrassing for the regional side, Eagles.
