WPL 2023 – 3rd Umpire Makes Shocking DRS Call For Hayley Matthews

Hands down, we witnessed one of the most shocking moments in world cricket, that too with the help of technology. The incident happened in today’s Women’s Premier League (WPL) game between UP Warriorz and Mumbai Indians Women, when the latter were chasing down the target of 160 set for them in WPL 2023 Match 10.

West Indies all-rounder and MI Women opener Hayley Matthews was on strike when this freak incident took place. England’s Sophie Ecclestone was bowling the fifth over of the innings when she had an LBW appeal. Paschim Pathak gave it not out but the decision was reviewed, which was then given out by the third umpire amidst a whole lot of drama on the field.

WPL 2023 – DRS errors gives Hayley Matthews falsely OUT

When the decision was originally reviewed, the replay shows the ball hitting the pad and then the ball tracking shows three reds. Suddenly, we see Matthews super upset and rattled, talking to the opponent captain Alyssa Healy and refusing to move off. Finally, she decided to walk away, when a whole lot of further drama took place.

The DRS decision from the third umpire was once again challenged, something we haven’t seen before. The replays were shown once again and it seemed to be completely different footage of a different delivery, or it seems to have been reverse footage. In actuality, it was ground, bat, pad. But the original replays showed something else. Matthews stood her ground knowing the replays weren’t right at all.

Social media was not sure of what’s happening and let us clarify for you that it wasn’t a review of the review, but the on-field umpires Pathak and N Janani were not convinced with the decision, which made them ask for it to be checked again. Eventually, Matthews was declared as NOT OUT but it definitely upset her, as it did to thousands of cricket fans watching what just happened.

Clearly a technical issue that made the replays show in reverse, but we’re not sure how the third umpire decided to give that out. A lot of trolling began on social media and jokes happened on Mumbai and Ambani and how they own the DRS systems, but that’s all fun and jokes. We’re a bit upset that such a grave error took place on such a big stage, and this should certainly be looked into.

Matthews was finally dismissed in the 8th over, caught and bowled to Ecclestone itself. She walked away, still evidently rattled by what happened a few minutes ago. She struggled in her innings of 12(17) and her wicket made it an exciting contest against UP Warriorz at Mumbai’s Brabourne Stadium.

A few moments later, another stunning moment took place wherein MI captain Harmanpreet Kaur was bowled but the bail did a little jiggle before settle back on to the stumps. For more such cricket and sports betting updates from around the world too, stay tuned to ReadScoops.com.
