WI vs IRE 2nd ODI Cancelled Due to Covid-19

For those of you who think that these new variants of Covid-19 aren’t all that harmful, think again. The numbers are super scary all across the world and even international cricketers living in bubbles are no exception to this. We’ve seen plenty of disruptions in international as well as franchise league cricket in the last year or so, one of the most recent being the trouble at the Big Bash League 2021/22, with rising cases.

In India too, domestic tournaments like the Ranji Trophy have been put off until further notice and now, the 2022 Ireland tour of West Indies seems to be in doubt. The 2nd ODI between the two teams was supposed to be played at the Sabina Park in Jamaica on 11th January but it has been called off as two players from the Ireland camp have tested positive for coronavirus.

WI vs IRE 2nd ODI Cancelled Due to Covid-19

WI vs IRE 2nd ODI called off

This comes after two players from the Ireland team were ruled out due to injury, and then also the Covid-19 positive cases, which means that the visiting team would be left with a completely depleted squad for the 2nd ODI of the CG Insurance One-Day International series, with all games on the tour scheduled at Sabina Park. Remember, Paul Stirling and Shane Getkate didn’t even join the tour after testing positive.

The decision of postponing the 2nd ODI between the two teams came after Cricket West Indies (CWI) and Cricket Ireland (CI) issued a join statement on the issue after rigorous testing took place in the Irish team. All other players will also be tested as the squads were in close contact during the 1st ODI, and the boards are trying to review the match schedule and allow the series to go on in some way.

Windies won 1st ODI by 24 runs

The announcement comes at a very wrong time as we were in for a really thrilling series. The visiting side has been clear underdogs but they started brilliantly in pursuit of 270 in the 1st ODI and ended up short only by 24 runs of the target. There was good cricket from both sides and we were looking forward to seeing some more of it.

We’re not sure how the boards can make the rest of the series work and since Ireland didn’t come with too many reserves here, it’s unlikely they can go on. We may very well see the tour being cancelled, much like how the 2021 Netherlands tour of South Africa was cancelled late last year.

It’s sad for both sides as Ireland doesn’t get many chances to tour a Test playing side like this while West Indies also had plenty of points to prove, playing the 1st ODI without a sponsor on their jersey as well. Either way, we’re hoping for the best decision to come out of this situation. For more updates on the tour and from cricket from across the world, stay tuned to ReadScoops.com
