WATCH: Wesley Madhevere Takes Screaming Catch

We say that catches win matches and this is especially true when there’s a lot on the line and everything to play for. And that was the case in today’s Scotland vs Zimbabwe game at Hobart, which was a do-or-die match for both teams at the 2022 T20 World Cup Qualifiers. Both have been great in the tournament so far but only one team would go through, so the pressure was well and truly on.

Scotland batted first and they managed to lose a couple of wickets within the powerplay itself, putting them on the backfoot early in this deciding game. It was a virtual knockout game and both teams needed to bring their A-game. And one person who brought out his best game was young all-rounder Wesley Madhevere who leapt to take a stunning and screaming catch and mid-wicket in the fifth over.

We knew Zimbabwe was all pumped up as the first wicket to fall also saw a great catch in the circle by a Sikandar Raza who had to run backwards to take that skier. Next, it was Madhevere’s time to shine as he jumped to complete a blinder at mid-wicket, after Matthew Cross pulled one hard towards him. The batsman would’ve expected a boundary to his name, but it wasn’t to be at all.

The live commentary on Cricbuzz described it as, “Madhevere at mid-wicket dives to his left like a leaping salmon to get Zimbabwe a wicket out of nothing”. And it truly was a wicket out of nothing because it was a short ball with no danger, and it was pulled very strongly and confidently too. Cross would’ve been super disappointed while the Zimbabweans were delighted.

A good start is very important in crucial games and that’s exactly what Zimbabwe got here, pegging a couple of wickets in the powerplay in this must-win game. For those who don’t know, Madhevere has been a regular part of the Zimbabwean national side in the last year or so, recently graduating from the U-19 national side.

He bats and bowls, and clearly fields like a star as well. If this is what we’re going to see from lads like him, the Zimbabwe national cricket future is certainly in good hands. At the time of writing this, Scotland was 64/3 in the 10th over of their innings, below the 8-ball and trying to get a move on. Zimbabwe still int he driver’s seat.
