Today was a big day for women’s cricket across the world as it was the final of the ninth edition of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) in Australia. The final was Adelaide Strikers W vs Brisbane Heat W and this turned out to be a low-scoring thriller in front of a packed house cheering on the girls at the Adelaide Oval.
Strikers Women won the toss and batted first and after a quick start, they lost wickets at regular intervals and found themselves at a below par score of 125/5 in their 20 overs. However, they came out like a spirited side and took every chance they made, allowing the game to go deep. The WBBL 2023 final was eventually won by Adelaide Strikers Women and we’ve seen some great reactions on Twitter (X).
Reactions to WBBL 2023 winners, Adelaide Strikers
Many people may have doubted which side this game was twisting and turning, because Brisbane Heat W were ahead for most part of the game. In the final over, they needed 13 runs to win the WBBL 09 final and when there was 11 to get in 3 balls, Mikayla Hinkley came out and smashed her first ball for six over long on, leaving 5 to win in 2 balls.

A top top spell from Amanda-Jade Wellington. Amelia Kerr should not have taken the leg bye on the 2nd ball.
What a terrific finish to this WBBL season.
Back to back titles for the Strikers led terrifically by McGrath— ParteekNotPrateek (@randomcricfacts) December 2, 2023
Amanda Jade-Wellington has proved to be brilliant under pressure and she came in to bowl the final over, getting Hinkley the next ball and then defending the final delivery as well, helping her side get a 3-run victory in the WBBL 2023 final. Amelia Kerr was brilliant on the day but she was kept off the strike in the final over, remaining unbeaten on 30(32)* at the end of the game.

Wellington bowled the final over of the WBBL 2022 final as well, where she successfully defended a total too. She did it back-to-back and ended with 3/16 in the WBBL 2023 final, proving how crucial she is to the side. Strikers Women have won back to back titles, defending a total as low as 125. With that, Tahlia McGrath became the second captain after Kirby Short to win two WBBL titles.
WBBL 2023 winning moment
There’s plenty of praise for Jade Wellington on social media as she defended 13 runs in the final over. She was awarded the player of the match but let’s not forget the contribution from the captain, Tahlia McGrath. She got them off to a good start, scoring 38 with the bat, and then she came in and picked up 2 crucial wickets in successive balls in a single over, turning the game on its head.

Tahlia McGrath. She should captain Australia. Very soon. #WBBLFinal #WBBL09

Absolute banger of a final. Amanda-Jade Wellington is ice cold. The Heat will regret Amelia Kerr coming in at first drop in the sixth over and ending not out only facing 32 balls in a small chase.
