WATCH: Smriti Mandhana Reaction to 3.4Cr Deal in WPL Auction 2023

Today is a historic day in cricket and in particular, women’s cricket. Women’s Premier League (WPL) was launched a couple of weeks ago and the auction was set for 13th Feb 2023. The first name out of the bag in the WPL 2023 Auction was none other than leading Indian barter Smriti Mandhana and she set the records straight right from the start of the auction.

She had a base price of 50 Lakh and the bidding wars began for her right away, mostly between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore. Finally, Anita Ambani from Mumbai dropped out but Bangalore kept at it, finally purchasing her for a whopping 3.4 Crore contract for the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League.

Smriti Mandhana reacts to WPL Auction 2023 contract

It’s a historic day because no women’s cricketer in the game has ever been paid such big money and the excitement was visible across the entire India Women’s national side, who were watching the WPL Auction 2023 LIVE from South Africa, where they’re playing the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup. They began their campaign on a winning note yesterday against Pakistan Women.

RCB will now have another number #18 playing for them as it’s the same jersey number with which Virat Kohli plays, and Kohli has been a part of the RCB family since the start of the league, being the only cricketer to have represented a single IPL franchise over the years. Mandhana was watching intently as the team followed the WPL Auction live on a projector in their hotel in South Africa.

The team was already cheering her on as she was the first to come out of the bag in the auction. Next, the volume started rising as she crossed the 2-Crore mark and then even higher when it reached 2.5 Crore. Finally, they all went up in a massive cheers as Mandhana was deemed SOLD to Royal Challengers Bangalore for a career-changing 3.4 Crore price tag, an amount these girls haven’t seen before in sport fees.

It’s not very often that you get to see such pure emotions, and they were all on display as Mandhana sat in the middle of her team in her India jersey, watching the bidding go higher and higher. Her teammates were genuinely happy for her and they kept shouting in hopes of the bids going even higher than what it was. See the video of Smriti Mandhana’s reaction here:

The video sees Mandhana surrounded by her Team India teammates like Jemimah Rodrigues, Richa Ghosh, Harmanpreet Kaur, Shafali Verma, and others. Later, Kaur also got a massive contract of 1.7 Crore while Deepti Sharma got a contract of a whopping 2.6 Crore. Also joining RCB Women’s team were women’s cricket legends Ellyse Perry and Sophie Devine, so it seems to be a strong side already.
