Virat vs Rohit Captaincy – See Who Twitter Chose!

While this is the team which has one of the biggest fan bases among all the IPL teams, each year, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) manages to disappoint. IPL 2020 was slightly better for the franchise, making the playoffs stage for the first time since IPL 2016. However, one game in the playoffs is all they lasted, losing to Sunrisers Hyderabad and completing 13 years in the IPL without a trophy!

In the past, the debate of whether Virat Kohli is or isn’t the ideal captain has popped up on several occasions but it’s never come down as hard on him as it did this time. Gautam Gambhir raised the point that no captain has ever been allowed 8 years at the helm (IPL 2013 was when Kohli took over as RCB captain) without a trophy. I personally love and adore Kohli but I’ve got to agree with Gauti here.

Similarly, India hasn’t got any silverware on the international stage since Virat took over the limited overs captaincy a few years back. He has plenty of personal achievements and Team India has been brilliant too, but the captaincy debate continues. Remember that the other person in this debate is Rohit Sharma – the most successful IPL captain till date.

IPL 2013, IPL 2015, IPL 2017, IPL 2019, IPL 2020. In case you didn’t get that as yet, these are the years when Mumbai Indians ended as IPL champions and during all seasons, it was Rohit Sharma leading the side. Of course, there’s the argument that Rohit has had a much better team to play with but we can’t help but agree that Virat did make some glaring captaincy errors during the recent IPL 2020 season.

In fact, Rohit has even had a great record every time he’s been asked to lead the Men in Blue in the limited overs formats. However, he wasn’t even picked in the original squads to the 2020/21 tour of Australia, so can we say that BCCI is actually considering him for this role? Let’s also take into consideration the fact that Kohli has set the highest bar when it comes to fitness for the side, something we can’t really say about Rohit.

Twitter takes the call

Read Scoops recently ran a poll to understand who the fans are backing to be India’s limited overs captain and the answer is evident, as you can see below. A good chunk of Twitter fans decided to vote in favour of Rohit Sharma and the recent 2-1 ODI series loss in Australia may have attributed to this as well. Leave your comment if you also have something to say!
