Virat Kohli – Third Most Followed Sportsman on Instagram

We all knew he was something special when he won India the U-19 World Cup in Malaysia all the way back in 2008. We knew he had the class, the timing, the talent, and the skill to become one of India’s next top cricketers. But quite honestly, Virat Kohli surpassed all expectations, of fans and critics both. He progressed from that kid to one of the most admired sportsmen across the world.

From being that chubby kid from Delhi who won India a junior World Cup, Kohli has transformed over a little more than a dozen years with the national cricket side. Right from his fashion sense to his endorsements to leading the national side to marrying one of the leading ladies in Bollywood, Kohli’s career has gone from one high to another.

Virat Kohli - Third Most Followed Sportsman on Instagram

The 32-year old batsman has taken the game of cricket to another level, in March 2021 becoming the first ever cricketer to breach the 100-million followers mark on Instagram. With cricket being played in a limited number of countries, we never though we’d see the day a cricketer had such a massive social media following. However, he’s further climbing the list now, with another milestone passed just 7 months later.

He has crossed 164+ million Instagram followers which makes him the third highest sportsman on the list, overtaking Brazilian football sensation, Neymar Jr. When he hit 100 million in March 2021, he was the first Indian and Asian to do so, and that stays still. He’s gone to #17 on the list of highest followed Instagram accounts, and is only behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi among sportspeople.

There’s no other cricketer in the top 50 most followed Instagram accounts, while the only other Indians are Priyanka Chopra, Shraddha Kapoor and Neha Kakkar. Virat Kohli’s fitness has often been spoken about, and that’s one of the reasons his international popularity has gone through the roof. He now immediately trails Nike, Jennifer Lopez and Taylor Swift on the most followed list.

The new social media milestone comes a couple of days before his 33rd birthday, so that’s a great present for him as well. Another present would be if India can go on to win the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup which is currently taking place in UAE. Keep soaring Virat Kohli, we love you.
