He’s been Indian cricket’s golden boy over the last decade and more. He won the 2008 U-19 World Cup in Malaysia and it didn’t take him too long to be promoted to the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the national side as well. We’re talking about Virat Kohli who is the first and only Indian player to win two consecutive ICC Cricketer of the Year awards, while also winning the ODI Player of the Decade in 2020!
We’re not going to talk about his achievements on this page because that would take up all the space we have but we’re going to talk about how he’s developed over the years in terms of run scoring year-on-year and show you whether there’s been an incline or decline in recent months. Yes, we know he’s not got an international century in two years now and we look at his performance between 2008-2021 so far!
Virat Kohli international runs (2008-2021)
Of course, you can count out the first two years as he was just elevated to the national side in 2008 and 2009 and wasn’t a regular part of the team. But come 2010, he got 1,000+ international runs in that calendar year and since then, there was no looking back. He became the first player in the world to record 1,000+ runs at the highest level for 10 consecutive years, doing so every year between 2010-2019!
In between, he had a couple of stellar years especially 2016 to 2019. He was clearly in the form of his life back then when he scored 2,000+ international runs across formats for four consecutive years. Mind you, these are unheard of and unprecedented records that only he could achieve. We’re not even counting that IPL 2016 season where he nearly scored 1,000 runs and we don’t think that will ever be scaled!

As we wind up the year 2021, we’re looking back at how he’s progressed over the years and how the Covid-19 break from cricket took away a lot from his game. Yes, India did play a lot less cricket in 2020 than they were scheduled to play but Kohli had his chances and he couldn’t convert, which saw him dip to less than 1k runs in a year for the first time since he did it the first time in 2010.
The similar fate followed in 2021 where he couldn’t get an international century to his name across formats, and only scored 964 runs in the year. The year ended on a poor note for him as he got only 53 runs in the 1st Test against South Africa and prior to the start of this tour, the 33-year old was also sacked as ODI captain, so that’s also probably playing a lot on his mind when he walks out to bat each time.
Will Virat Kohli bounce back in 2022?
It’s been a tough period for him, these last couple of years. Stepping down as captain, having a lean time with the bat and also coping with a lot of pressure from fans and people on social media. However, knowing what a champion and fighter he is, he’s likely to come back strong. If he is to break all those Sachin Tendulkar records that people believed he would, then he has to make a fitting comeback in 2022.
