Will Unmukt Chand Play Matches For Melbourne Renegades?

Yesterday, we heard news of the first Indian male player to represent a franchise team in the Big Bash League (BBL), and that was none other than Unmukt Chand. The 28-year old called it quits on his Indian career in August this year and immediately shifted to play franchise cricket in America, where he ended with a very successful season indeed.

Those runs he got in USA meant he captured quite a few eyeballs including those from selectors at the world famous Big Bash League. One of the most popular and entertaining T20 leagues in the world, the 2012 U-19 World Cup winning captain for India was signed yesterday by the Melbourne Renegades, which is one of the biggest moves in his career so far.

Will Unmukt Chand Play Matches For Melbourne Renegades?

After that junior World Cup victory, his career never seemed to kick off and now, he’s moving real quick in the last 2-3 months. He’s set to play for Renegades and we wonder whether he’ll get game time, considering he’s an overseas player and there’s always an overseas player limit in such franchise leagues. However, BBL teams have a limit of 2 overseas players and they always seem to sign not more than 2 or 3!

What this ensures is that they don’t have morale issues in the camp and all the players they’re paying the big bucks for do in fact get time on the pitch. If he was picked for an IPL team as an overseas player, we’d be unsure of whether he’d get to play or not. However, he’s one of only two overseas players in the Renegades squad for BBL 2021/22, the other being tall English pacer Reece Topley.

Aaron Finch (C), Jake Fraser-McGurk, Sam Harper, Marcus Harris, Mackenzie Harvey, Josh Lalor, Nic Maddinson, Shaun Marsh, James Pattinson, Mitchell Perry, Cameron Boyce, Zak Evans, Jack Prestwidge, Kane Richardson, Will Sutherland, Unmukt Chand*, Reece Topley*.

Renegades always have the chance of playing one or no overseas players, but it’s unlikely they do that. “I’m very excited, it’s great to be part of the Melbourne Renegades family. I’ve always followed the Big Bash and it’s a great opportunity for me to come and play some good cricket,” said Chand about this new move. For more updates on BBL 2021/22, stay tuned to ReadScoops.com
