Earlier today, West Zone completed a massive victory in the 2022 Duleep Trophy final. They dominated proceedings through all five days of the final being played at Coimbatore and they lifted the trophy, after a massive win of 294 runs. The tournament is a major fixture on the Indian domestic circuit calendar and obviously, it attracts a lot of eyeballs on an annual basis.

This year, there were quite a few individual performers including a massive double century from the young Yashasvi Jaiswal which helped them West Zone get a humongous 2nd innings score of 585/4 d and their opponents South Zone couldn’t recover from that onslaught. Jaiswal was awarded the Man of the Match for his 265(323) which also became his career best FC score.

Jaiswal scored this massive double century after being dismissed for only 1 in the 1st innings. And while he took home all the honours, let’s not forget that there were others who contributed to their success in the 2022 Duleep Trophy. Among them was Mumbai lad Sarfaraz Khan who also got a century in that 2nd innings, finishing at 127*.

One thing we know for sure now is that Khan knows how to handle the pressure of big occasions, as he scored a fine century in the 2021/22 Ranji Tropy final as well. With the ball here, Jaydev Unadkat and Shams Mulani were also major contributors in this win, picking up 4-fers in the 1st innings and 2nd innings respectively.

Over the last 12-15 months, there’s been a lot of conversation about the future of Ajinkya Rahane’s Test future. The 34-year old had a string of low scores for India along with Cheteshwar Pujara. However, Pujara was a leading run scorer in both the FC as well as List A tournaments in England which kept his highest level hopes alive. As for Rahane, the rut continued as he got scores of 8 and 15 in this Duleep Trophy final.

And while Rahane will be criticised for his run scoring and poor form, he was a great captain indeed, leading his side to the Duleep Trophy final. In fact on the final day, he disciplined his own teammate Jaiswal against whom several complaints were being lodged on the field. After warning him initially, he decided to ask Jaiswal to leave the field for indiscipline. Take a look here:

And when big wins happen, everyone tends to look at the winning team only. Let’s not forget there were a lot of players who impressed but ended on the losing side. One of them was Baba Indrajith who has also been consistently scoring runs over the years for Tamil Nadu. He scored a century in a losing cause and current India cricketer Dinesh Karthik believes he has a bright future ahead of him:
