CSA T20 Challenge Most Runs List

Having originated way back in 2004, the CSA T20 Challenge is one of the oldest T20 franchise leagues in the world, having changed quite a few sponsors along the way. South Africa’s premier T20 regional tournament has seen some massive run scoring and wicket-taking over the years, with records tumbling and fresh milestones being reached with every new season each year.

Since it’s a batsman’s game, we’re going to talk about some batting records made in the CSA T20 Challenge on this page. Many good players have come and gone in this tournament, most of them being local South African players itself. So we’re going to cover a complete CSA T20 Challenge leading run scorers list, last updated 8th March 2024, at the start of the 2024 CSA T20 Challenge. See the full list here:

5) Henry Davids

Much like every other player on this list, Henry Davids also has a little bit of international experience under his belt and has played for three franchise teams including Cape Cobras, Titans, and Western Province Boland. He played till 40+ years old and smashed 2,331 runs in 120 games in the CSA T20 Challenge. He has 11 fifties and a century in this league but now that he know longer plays professional cricket, we won’t see him advancing on this list.

4) Farhaan Behardien

He’s got the most international experience on this list and is slightly ahead of Davids, with 2,452 runs in 122 games in this league. You may say he’s played more games but he bats in the lower order and has one of the highest strike rates among batsmen on this CSA T20 most runs list (136+) as well as an impressive average (42+). He played for Titans, Knights, and then Boland over time and his stats include 11 fifties and 99 sixes in the competition.

3) JJ Smuts

He bats right handed and bowls left-handed and we know that it’s the right hand that does most damage because JJ Smuts’ records have mostly been with the bat than with the ball in this tournament. Prior to the start of the 2024 CSA T20 Challenge, he had 2,463 runs in 113 career games in this tournament, which includes 9 fifties and 2 CSA T20 centuries. He played his entire career (2008-2022) for the Warriors and Dolphins.

2) Reeza Hendricks

He’s played the least number of games from those in the top 5 (96 matches), but he’s managed to be one of the most prolific run scorers in the CSA T20 Challenge over the seasons. With 2,550 runs in this tournament, he’s got 17 fifties as well as a single century and we think the 34-year old is probably the only person who could overtake van Wyk, top this CSA T20 Challenge run scorers list and be at the top for quite a while. He has the least number of sixes from players on this list – 55!

1) Morne van Wyk

He retired from this league after the 2019 season but his name will be in the record books for many years to come, as Morne van Wyk is way ahead of everyone else on the CSA T20 Challenge run scoring charts. With 3,183 runs in 119 games in his CSA T20 career, he’s scored as many as 24 fifties with no one else even having 20 fifties to their name as yet. The only thing he would’ve regretted is not getting a century in this tournament!
