Tom Curran, Ben Manenti Out of BBL 2021/22

Possibly one of the most successful T20 franchise sides in the world after Mumbai Indians, Sydney Sixers have won 3 KFC Big Bash League titles including 2 consecutive victories in the tournament so far. They’ve begun BBL 11 well so far with 3 wins in 4 games and they’re well on course to complete a hat-trick of victories but now, some injuries will hurt their bowling attack for the rest of the season.

Tom Curran, Ben Manenti Out of BBL 2021/22

We’re talking about a neck-injury that put spinner Ben Manenti out of the rest of the BBL 2021/22 season, who picked 1/18 in his only game this season so far and was the first-choice spinner after Steve O’Keefe. Now, they’ll have to look for other back-up options. In the pace bowling attack, they’ve got another big blow in the loss of one of their overseas pros in English T20 specialist, Tom Curran.

The elder Curran brother has been a big part of the Sixers franchise over the last couple of seasons, ending as their top wicket-taker in BBL 09 as well. With 5 wickets in 4 games this season, Curran has been a major part of the bowling attack and they will look for a replacement here as well, as he’ll be flying home to England, ruled out of BBL 11 with a back injury.

This will hurt the Sixers’ chances of getting their third consecutive title, while Steve O’Keefe will also miss Tuesday’s clash against adelaide Strikers. It’s lucky he will only be out for a while because Curran’s countryman Chris Jordan will also play his last match against Strikers, as he’ll also be flying home to England after that game.

Moises Henriques on losing players in BBL 11

“We pride ourselves on being a club and a team that embraces challenges. To lose players of the calibre of Tom and Ben, and to have Steve on the sidelines, would be a challenge for any team. Those guys aren’t simply replaced. But … we always look to have 18 match-ready players in our squad,” said the captain Henriques, being optimistic.

On the batting front, they seem to be set as Moises himself began the BBL 2021/22 with a couple of seventies. Opener and wicket-keeper Josh Philippe has been on a roll with three fifties in 4 games, topping the BBL 11 run scoring charts as well, scoring 99 in his last game where a Glenn Maxwell century went in vain.
