Tim Paine Announces Retirement From Test Cricket

So many years of under-performing at the highest level and the Australian Test captain Tim Paine finally realised that making this decision would be the best one of his career. In over a decade since making his debut, Paine only managed 8 fifties and not a single century for Australia, struggling with a batting average of just above 32.

Paine was often trolled for being brought into the side only as a stopgap arrangement, after Steve Smith and David Warner were banned a couple of years back for their ball tampering issue. Paine was indeed an important part of the Australian rebuilding phase, brought in to lead the side but during that time, there weren’t any big scores from him. Now, he’s gone on to announce his retirement from Test cricket!

“I’ve anyway not been considered by the selectors in the shorter forms of the game. Since the last 2 years, I’ve been unable to get scores and my captaincy hasn’t been up to the mark either. Sometimes I feel that it’s not batting or bowling, but sledging and needling batsman that’s my strongest suit as a cricketer,” said Paine after announcing his retirement.

When India last toured Australia, he picked on Rishabh Pant, a 21-year old wicket-keeper. The 36-year old Paine admitted that he was envious of Pant’s agility and stroke-making, which led to the heated discussions in the first place. During the 2020/21 tour, Paine engaged with Ravi Ashwin, turning out to be ugly as well. The worst part is that he hasn’t been able to walk the talk either, dropping plenty of catches behind the stumps!

“When Ashwin told me to come to India which would be my last test series, I began thinking. I knew I wouldn’t be considered because I haven’t had any scores in the last few months either. So, why wait to be sacked when I can step down with my respect still in place?!” he added during his press statement. He also added that Twitter and social media trolls played a major role in him deciding to hang up his boots! See some below:
