While the ICC 50-over World Cup debuted way back in 1975, the ICC T20 World Cup first took place much later in 2007. However, players started going down in history as they got to play at this stage more often than in the 50-over World Cup, as the shortest format takes place on the global level once in two years instead of every four years.
We’ve spoken a lot about the top performers in this tournament and that includes listing down all the T20 World Cup winners from start till date. On the individual front, some batsmen and bowlers have outperformed everyone else and today, we’re going to dive into a list of the top run scorers in the history of the ICC T20 World Cup.
Who has the most runs in T20 World Cup history?
It’s not surprise that Virat Kohli is the T20 world cup highest run scorer, finishing as the top run scorer in two different editions – 2014 and 2022. Similarly, he finished second in the 2016 edition. Quite a few players have retired and we expect this list to keep changing as more editions take place over the years.

The 2024 T20 World Cup kicked off as the ninth edition of the tournament and we put up our T20 World Cup run scorers list (updated as of 1st June 2024) before the start of the group stage of this competition. We’ll dive into the particular statistics later on this page but first, see our complete T20 World Cup runs list in this table below:
ICC T20 World Cup – most runs list
Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene had six fifties and a century to his name in this tournament, topping the list until Kohli overtook him in 2022. He and Kohli are the only two players on the list to have 1,000+ runs in the T20 World Cup, but we expect Rohit Sharma, David Warner, and Jos Buttler to join them very soon, possibly in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
In terms of centuries, only Chris Gayle is the only one with two centuries in T20 World Cup history and in terms of fifties, India’s Virat Kohli leads the pack in terms of the most fifties in the competition (14), batting with an outstanding average of 81.50 which is not only the best on this list but also double the next best among the top 10 T20 World Cup run scorers.
Most T20 World Cup runs list
Gayle leads the list for the most sixes in the tournament’s history (63) while in terms of boundaries, three players have hit 100+ boundaries in the competition; Jayawardene tops the list with 111 fours. Kohli and AB de Villiers are the only two players on this list who have not been dismissed for a duck in their respective T20 World Cup careers so far.
