Suryakumar Yadav Ends Nightmare ODI Series – 3 Golden Ducks

It’s been a nightmare of a run for Suryakumar Yadav in ODI cricket of late, especially in the ongoing 2023 Australia tour of India. The number #1 T20 batsman in the world has been struggling in the longer format of the game and that’s been evident in the recent IND vs AUS series, where he bagged three consecutive ducks in the 3-match ODI series.

We don’t think we’ve ever seen this before in so many years of cricket where a top order batsman has got three consecutive GOLDEN DUCKS (first ball ducks) in ODI cricket. And it’s surprising that it’s happened to someone who is on top of his game and there are very few people in world cricket who are as confident as him right now. Read below for the full story…

Suryakumar Yadav Ends Nightmare ODI Series - 3 Golden Ducks

3 consecutive golden ducks for Suryakumar Yadav

He waited his chance for a long time today as both of Axar Patel and Hardik Pandya went out to bat before him. This must’ve been a strategic move after he was dismissed for 0(1) in the 1st ODI and then again 0(1) in the 2nd ODI too, both out LBW to the swinging bowling of Mitchell Starc. However, he didn’t seem to be carrying any sort of pressure when he walked out to bat after Kohli was the 5th wicket today.

Batting at number #7, the commentators were just talking about how Surya aka ‘SKY’ is a great player of spin. He was up against Ashton Agar this time, and he played another outrageous shot, exposing all his three stumps as the ball skidded through and kept low, sneaking past his bat and hitting timber. Third consecutive 0(1) dismissal for Suryakumar in this format!

We were all in disbelief and so was SKY as he looked down on the pitch, and didn’t even want to walk off. Moreover in the context of the game, he was the 6th wicket to fall in India’s chase of 270, with the side still needing 85 more runs to win and secure victory in the 3-match ODI series which was tied 1-1 after India won the first and Australia hit back in the second.

We rushed over to social media to see what people were saying and indeed, there were many who were feeling the pain along with Suryakumar Yadav, along with many others who chose the time to make a few jokes. And not just has this never happened to a top order batsman but it’s not happened to any cricketer in an ODI series in the history of the game before. See this stat:

Suryakumar Yadav was brought in to replace an injured Shreyas Iyer and he wouldn’t have been very pleased with this result. The debates have already begun about whether or not he deserves to be in the Indian ODI side, and whether the likes of Prithvi Shaw and / or Sanju Samson should be there instead.
