Over the years in the Indian Premier League (IPL), this team has always been looked at as one with the best bowling attack capable of defending sub 150 scores with ease. However, everything changes for Sunrisers Hyderabad going into IPL 2022 as they had a major fallout with former captain David Warner and released him. They only got 3 wins in 14 games in IPL 2021 and have made a complete revamp since then.

They kept only three players from their squad of last season including Kiwi batsman and IPL 2018 Orange Cap winner Kane Williamson who will lead the side. Additionally, the retained two Jammu & Kashmir players in Abdul Samad and Umran Malik. A very handy middle order batter and someone who can give you a few overs, Samad is an upcoming talent while Malik is easily the fastest bowler in India right now.
They picked up Rahul Tripathi at the IPL 2022 Auction and quite honestly, we don’t think KKR used him quite well in the last couple of season. He’s proven over the years to be good as an opener and that’s where he should bat, most likely alongside South Africa’s Aiden Markram. However, there are other Indian opening options if they want to experiment, like Samad or Priyam Garg or even Abhishek Sharma.

And then to pick up the pace in the middle order, they’ve signed Nicholas Pooran who didn’t bring his best game in IPL 2021 for Punjab Kings, but we know what a talent he can be. However, if Pooran, Markram and Williamson are all picked, then it leaves only one slot for an overseas bowler. Considering they have other Indian batting resources, Markram may not necessary be a first-choice player for SRH this year.
They also have Glenn Phillips with the bat who we think won’t have much of a role to play for SRH in IPL 2022. With the ball, they will also have a selection dilemma from the overseas lot because they have the Afghani pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi to go with Sean Abbott and Marco Jansen, both of whom are in good rhythm. But we think the fourth slot with go to West Indian all-rounder Romario Shepherd who is set to make his IPL debut.
Shepherd has been a part of various T10 and T20 leagues and we’ve seen his ability to bowl well and hit the big shots too, much like a Carlos Brathwaite. From among the Indian bowlers, there’s T Natarajan to go with 2-time Purple Cap winner Bhuvneshwar Kumar. And while Natarajan has been facing plenty of injury issues, there’s a pace bowling replacement for him in former RR player, Kartik Tyagi.

They have Shreyas Gopal with the ball as a spin option but we don’t think he’s a major threat to opponents. The x-factor in the side will be Washington Sundar who seems to have matured as an all-rounder and has plenty of Team India experience too. While this doesn’t look like the best squad, it’s certainly not the worst and that’s why a bet at odds of 17.0 on Betway is recommended, especially since Williamson is leading them.

The team has too many overseas options in our opinion, which may cause a little bit of unrest in the camp. They also seem to have an excessive number of all-round contributors and fewer specialists with only bat and/or ball. Either way, they’ll be looking to bounce back from the lows of last year and will be backed by a completely new coaching staff as well in IPL 2022.
