In October 2021, a historic development took place in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as two new teams were drafted and ready to play what would be the first edition of the tournament where 10 teams would take part. One of those teams is Gujarat Titans and while this is one of the most important states in the country politically, we think this team will struggle in IPL 2022, having built a below-average squad.

There was no retention for the Titans as they began with a complete fresh slate. However, something new was introduced in the IPL 2022 Player Draft and here, they picked up three players in Hardik Pandya, Rashid Khan, and Shubman Gill. They spent heavily on these players but they’re all high impact players, with the exception of Pandya who is running a bit cold in recent months. As for Rashid, he’s a world class spin wizard and we have no doubts about his contributions.
The batting order of this side seems very weak and apart from Shubman providing some consistency at the top, we don’t see anyone who can score 400+ runs through the IPL 2022 season. They have the weakest batting lineup in the tournament and while Jason Roy provided some firepower up to, he pulled out of the tournament due to personal reasons and Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz was signed as his replacement.

While most teams have multiple opening batter options, this team has just a few. In case they’re looking at an overseas player opening alongside Shubman, they could try going with Gurbaz or Matthew Wade. And if their overseas quota has already filled up, they could consider giving that spot to Wriddhiman Saha who hasn’t got a big score in the IPL since a while but after being axed from the Indian Test squad, he has a lot to prove.
Another player who has plenty of potential and has been contributing regularly with bat and ball for Tamil Nadu is Vijay Shankar. However, he hasn’t made any match-defining contributions in the IPL over the years and we’re not sure how much the team can rely on him. Abhinav Manohar is one exciting and muscular player from Karnataka who had a great 2021 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and he’s likely to make the first-choice team.
If there is one department where this team is moderately strong, it’s the bowling department. Among the spinners, they obviously have Rashid, but he’ll be backed up by Rahul Tewatia, Jayant Yadav and Noor Ahmad. After some insane knocks with the bat, Tewatia will have a bigger role to play as a batsman in IPL 2022 while we’re unsure if the other two spinners will get much of gametime in the IPL 2022 season.

The pace bowling unit looks to be much better with Mohammed Shami being the lone Indian pacer in the squad. Most teams have a few backups each but they don’t. In fact, they’ve gone too heavy on the overseas pacers front, with the likes of Dominic Drakes, Alzarri Joseph, and Lockie Ferguson being picked up at the IPL 2022 Auction. The squad is in a shambles and we’re not backing them at odds of 15.0 with Betway.

After his exploits in the 2021 T20 World Cup, Matthew Wade is a sure pick as opener while Rashid Khan will play every game as well. After showing a little bit of form with the bat in the international circuit in recent months, David Miller could be the third overseas pick and Lockie Ferguson could be the fourth. In case we find Miller out of form, they may go for an Indian batsman and play the added overseas bowler.
