The Indian Premier League (IPL) is India’s biggest T20 tournament and in fact, India’s biggest sporting event altogether. However, they’ve been travelling a lot in recent times because of Covid-19 restrictions in India. IPL 2020 was hosted in UAE and after the first half being cancelled, IPL 2021 was also moved to UAE for its second leg.
Now, there are offers coming in by countries to host IPL 2022 as well, as numbers of Covid-19 positive cases keep rising in India. Very recently, Tata Group came on board as the official sponsor of the IPL 2022 season and now, reports are in of Sri Lanka offering to host the IPL 2022 season, which is the 15th edition of the tournament.
Sri Lanka to host IPL 2022?
While nothing is confirmed as yet, we have reason to believe that BCCI has been looking for alternative venues for IPL 2022 and South Africa and Sri Lanka are the top options right now. South Africa had hosted IPL 2009 in the past when the tournament was moved out of India because of political reasons, but we believe Sri Lanka could be a more economical option.
As per reports, Secretary of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Mohan de Silva has spoken to Cricbuzz about how the board is happy to offer to host IPL 2022, saying, “We have seen reports and we will be happy to host the IPL in Sri Lanka. We will initiate talks with the BCCI regarding this soon. The Covid situation is not bad here in Sri Lanka and you can be assured we will be very warm hosts.”

IPL 2022 likely to move out of India
The IPL 2022 auction us set to take place in Bengaluru in February but there are also talks of this being moved out of the city, as Omicron is causing havoc in the country right now. However, nothing is official as yet. This year, Lucknow and Ahmedabad have also been added to the IPL 2022 roster, expanding the league to 10 teams for the first time ever.
While the IPL 2021 and PSL 2021 seasons were cancelled halfway because of Covid-19 cases, the Big Bash League ongoing in Australia has also been heavily disrupted because of positive cases. The only franchise league which went on smoothly was the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2021 and that’s why Sri Lanka is a good option for hosting IPL 2022.
Either way, there’s nothing more for us to do and wait on the final update from the BCCI and the other cricket boards who are considering hosting the IPL 2022 season. 10 teams means we’re looking forward to a 2-month season which means it’s going to be tough to host, wherever it will be hosted.
