Ashes 2021/22 – 5th Test Sees Most Bizarre Dismissal

Every day of this Ashes 2021/22 series has been exciting. And there’s always one moment in each session which makes the highlight reel at the end of the day. Today was Day 1 of the 5th Ashes 2021/22 Test and we had one more similar moment, featuring none other than the #1 ICC ranked Test batsman, Marnus Labuschagne.

“I have never ever seen that in Test cricket,” said Michael Vaughan on air when this moment happened. It was 22.1 in the first session of the day when Stuart Broad was running in to bowl to Australia’s top batsman of this series. What followed is Labuschagne walking to the off-side and falling over to expose his stumps, ending up being bowled and the batter flat on all fours on the ground.

See Marnus Labuschagne fall flat

While it took Australia deeper into trouble and down 4 wickets in the first session itself, it was quite a hilarious moment. No one really understood where Marnus was going as he started walking towards the offside and it only got worse as he couldn’t recover, with his spikes failing and slipping, thus missing the ball, and it was TIMBER!

While the hosts were reduced to 83/4 and it was a serious situation for them going into the first break of the day, the players saw the funny side of it. Slow motion replays showed Steve Smith and captain Pat Cummins laughing as they watched it on their laptop screen while Broad and his English teammates also had a laugh at what they saw here.

Most bizarre dismissal

We’ve seen a few weird dismissals in Test cricket and this one is right among there at the top of the list. The exaggerated shuffle before Broad could bowl the ball probably got Marnus into trouble but not being able to make contact with the ball later only made matters worse for him. Going into the break, Australia were 85/4, currently leading the series 3-0. See the dismissal here:

Immediately, social media was lit up with memes and trolls and even Cricket Australia tweeted about it being a super bizarre dismissal. Another user called it embarrassing, saying, “Marnus Labuschagne ft. the most embarrassing dismissal of all-time #AshesTest #Ashes” Users were quick to relate it to another very similar decision where the batsman trapped himself, back in 1996.

“Marnus Labuschagne dismissal today bowling of Broad @ Hobart today reminds me Ijaz Ahmad bowled against England @ Lords test 1996 Ijaz Ahmad Bowled by @DominicCork95. Funny type of Dismissal #Ashes” said another user while sharing a video clip from that match as well:

Whether it’s a way he plays, a new record or milestone, him talking to himself while batting, or getting into weird dismissals like this, Marnie is always in the news and that’s why he’s one of our favourite cricketers right now. He’s sure to make more headlines in the days and months to come and forĀ similar updates from cricket from across the world, stay tuned to ReadScoops.com
